November 2, 2023 - Served blind. After the musk blew off, I immediately thought this was aged Napa Cab. It has a brighter core of red fruit without the deep mellowness I associate with older Bordeaux. Unfortunately, I succumbed to groupthink and called Bordeaux. Got my ass humbled!

I was also given a hint that this wine was a certain age range. I thought 1985, but I heard 1982 called out so I hesitated. Revealed as 1985.

There’s a life lesson in these notes somewhere. LOL

December 21, 2022 - Textbook old school Napa Cabernet. Pure and intense, lots of complexity and polish. Earthy bouquet, black raspberries, desiccated foliage, dried herbs, and a whiff of attractive oxidation. Bright, juicy, with a lovely medicinal and herbal quality. Terrific length and breadth. A streak of minerality cuts through succulent, cherry fruit flavors. Excellent bottle and I wish Napa Valley producers were still making this style of wine.

February 25, 2022 - Great color. Nose show good fruit. Hint of smoke. Really good levels of fruit and acidity. Nice balance. A joy to drink.

August 30, 2018 - Garnet color with a nose showing age -- a bit of oxidation, but nice graphite and dark fruit. Clearly a mature wine, but not falling apart. Palate shows a full body and quite a lot of energy. More acid than I had expected -- but quite tasty. Wouldn't recommend holding this longer. Quite good now, but drink up.

February 8, 2016 - The 1985 Groth Cabernet is holding up well, its vibrant ruby hue revealing little bricking. The nose of dark fruit tones is just a little muddled, whether by barrel toast, sur maturité or something else it's hard to say. On the palate the tannins are nicely melted and the wine is still youthful. All it's missing is a bit of aromatic purity and complexity.
