October 27, 2019 - Dark mahogany colour betraying some age. Opened and let sit a couple of hours without decanting. Reticent nose to start with. Smooth full taste, with very few tannins left. Good warm long spicy finish, clearly a hot vintage (although 13% makes us laugh nowadays). A tad dry at the back end. Solid, not very refined.

October 14, 2019 - I feel the wine has found its level of performance, and has not really lived up to its initial promise when it first was entering its drinking window. However, that said, it is a good solid wine, that is drinking beautifully with a structure to stay here for a few years. The nose is full of cedar, cherry, and red berry. The fruit is prominent on the palate, but the tannin is quite dominant. Depth and balance are good, but the finish is on the shorter side and a little unbalanced and harsh with the tannin.

October 6, 2019 - Damn - this is gorgeous... mature, and in full command. Despite 2003's reputation (hot & ripe), I find this wine to be anything but... powerful yet restrained fruit, cedar spice & graphite woven throughout, balanced acid that carries it across the palate. Wonderful. Delicious St. Julien.

September 13, 2019 - Drinking very well right now. Medium weight, ruby red fruit with muted nose initially and then opens up. After a mandatory two hour decant, Bordeaux becomes fruit forward with terrific secondary flavors of cigar box, leather, cassis and forecast floor...all nicely integrated. Despite this hot vintage, this wine is restrained and delicious.

(Chateau Lagrange St Julien) Since my last tasting of this when the wine seemed very unusual, at the UGC tasting in October 2005, I have been eager to try it again. Today, this seems like a different wine. On the nose it has a wealth of deep fruit, with quite an exotic perfume and it is very attractive. I find it difficult to believe that this is the same wine that I tasted last year. Good style on the palate too, very nicely composed, although with the huge grip of tannins typical of the vintage. But there is decent acidity too, and on the basis of this bottle this seems to have a very good potential, but as always I damp down my score...I am still worried that the tannins will outlast the fruit in this vintage. But the big question with this wine is what was going on in 2005? And what will the next bottle taste like?

(Chateau Lagrange St Julien) Whoa! An unusual nose here; confected, cola-aniseed-cherry nose with a lifted, estery nature. Rather light on entry, but picks up through the midpalate, with some rounded morello cherry fruit and firm tannin. Little in the way of presence or texture, and incongruous acidity. What's gone wrong here? One to avoid.
