October 28, 2019 - From (free!) glass. Woogh, the nose: deep, deep coconut and an elegant red nail polish. Ok, that's fanciful, but there was overall a bizarre, compelling kind of "sexy/hollow" quality to the wine - a painted lady with an appeal both overcoming and consisting in her artiface. I guess the nail polish also connects with a sherried aspect to the nose and palate, both a salty sandalwood and an older, mild molasses quality in a much older Rioja I had recently. Anyway, back to more conventional things: cocoanut oakies, cassis, piquito pepper, plenty of tannin still there. Very young, very complex. Will age into something wirey and profound. Certainly fascinating and giving plenty of pleasure now.
October 21, 2019 - Not blind
Red berries, reluctant but with lot of power. A bit too one dimensional in this stage but refreshing acidity- 92-93
September 27, 2019 - No formal notes, PnP at restaurant. Loved the complexity, didn’t find oak overpowering. Took home 1/3 of the bottle and it was even better the next day. Great bottle.
September 3, 2019 - Opened for our 12th wedding anniversary. Initial aromas were fruit, and birthday cake. Left bottle for 30 min before pouring. found it to be a little too soft initially, but now I'm 3 hrs in, and the soft supple tannins are awesome, velvety and soft, but hang in there for a good 30 seconds. I went from a 90 point score initially to a 93 the way it's drinking now. Wish I had more of this, is just awesome.
August 24, 2019 - Dinner @ Shao Frankel + Blind Tasting: 2nd try this year: Nose of red fruits, lavender, rose and vanilla. Tasted cassis, flowers, violets, spices on the palate. Nice long eucalyptus finish. Slight acidity, just enough to bring out the floral scent and tertiaries. Enjoyed this thoroughly again. Open now
July 21, 2019 - Nose: The nose is savory and perfumed, filled with strawberries, sour red cherries, blackberries, violets, dill, vanilla, red currants, pipe tobacco, and asian spices. There is excellent depth and complexity here with a sour quality to the fruit that is quite attractive.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ tannins and medium+ acidity. The acidity is crisp and refreshing, but with a youthful quality to it while the tannins are silky. The feel is poised and refined with excellent depth and sour red cherries, violets, strawberries, blackberries, asian spices, vanilla, and some pipe tobacco.
Overall: This is absolutely gorgeous right now, though it was given over 6 hours of air. This is clearly young, but it is also extremely good, balanced, and aromatic which shows that it can get even better from where it is right now.
June 16, 2019 - Incredible wine. Balanced, perfect fruit, tannins, acidity. Was at dinner with family for fathers day but it was the WOTN. Smooth silky, satiny mouthfeel with great length and balance on the mid palette and finish. Sorry nothing more other than I wish I had a case. In a GREAT drinking window now.
April 18, 2019 - Dark purple almost black, extracted style. Delicious dark fruit with rustic edge, Christmas cake, sage, leather, mint, eucalyptus. Med plus weight in mouth, subtle fine grained tannins. Doesn’t seem old world to me but still quite enjoyable. Has at least 5 years left.
April 6, 2019 - A great example of classy Old World red. Expressive nose of concentrated blueberry, mild oak, sweet vanilla, balsamic, plus some tobacco and licorice. Very pleasing. Medium plus bodied, just ripe, smooth. Long finish. Let it breathe just 10 min, then it's 95/100. Hours later 94/100.
