July 22, 2020 - Medium garnet hues turning orange rust at the rim with a reflective edge. The legs indicate medium alcohol levels in the style of the producer. The nose has plenty of oak, which for some is a turn off, but is redeemed by perfumed aromas of cola, roses, old leather and black currants. The palate is medium-bodied, silky in texture, and fresh in acidity which carries the blackberry, seared meat, tobacco and sage flavors all throughout the mentholated finish. Overall, this is still a classic. If you prefer a fresher style with less oak, try the Gran Reserva 904. Drink now until 2036 (Revised from 2026).

June 19, 2020 - This was one of the best GR Rioja wines I have ever had. The nose was in the classical Rioja style, still quite a bit of black fruit but as one would expect there was the wood, cedar notes, and the spice notes, though compared to some I would suggest this is not a spicy Rioja. The wine was ready for me and presence of the fruit led to a more balanced wine than some of the more acidic GR Riojas. However it was the finish that really made me think this wine is worth the extra money compared to other LRA wines. There were additional notes of subtle fruit on the finish, possibly raspberries and even some minty notes. The wine was just beginning to develop the lighter colour associated with a mature GR wine.

April 18, 2020 - I haven’t been a fan of LRA in recent years, so this one surprised me. The high toned fruit takes the forefront, with warm vanilla, subtle dill and, yes, a hint of coconut adding interest. Well balanced. And very accessible right now even with a pop and pour.

March 27, 2020 - Alas, even perfection runs a bit off course at times.. This fifth bottle--the first four being the best Riojas I have had-- seemed out of sorts--not corked, but rather acid-driven and, even with time in the decanter and glass (one hour), still not showing its lush, clay/tobacco, moist earth, deep dark cherry, old wood knock-out flavor profile. Still that gorgeous deep garnet color and no sign of browning. Could be a stage but do decant at least an hour plus. Until next year!
