June 19, 2009 - at lunch at Jean Georges.
the last bottle of a 6 bottle lunch. With grilled beef tenderloin. Wow, this wine looked it's age. slightly browning with a clear rim. Taste on the other was full of verve. Roasted meat, dark red fruit, leather and tea.
truly delicious. -

September 5, 2007 - Dinner with Charles & Nigel at Charles' flat. Dark ruby, surprisingly so for a wine of this age. Beautiful nose full of exotic spices. Medium bodied and with a very nice complexity mixed with a terrifc sense of vibrancy. Medium plus length on the finish. The only red I went back to as it was delicious and perfect with the lamb shanks. 50+13+12+8+8 = 91

June 16, 2006 - France Trip Part 1 - Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 6/16/2006-6/17/2006: Same bottle as Vinsanity. Another treat enjoyed over dinner at Chateau Talaud. We opened this right after the 1989 Janasse VV, and it was fascinating to compare the two. The Pegau had a lighter color, with more high-toned fruit. Lots of animal, leather, and still-vibrant red fruit. Amazing finesse. Fantastic.

June 16, 2006 - Purchased at winery and drunk the following evening. Fantastic, mature nose of game, sous-bois, leather, and subtle fruit. Terrific mouthfeel and balance. Farther along the maturity curve than a bottle of 1989 Janasse VV that was served side by side, though far younger than the 1976 Beaucastel that followed (see TNs). Excellent, fully mature Pegau.

March 6, 2006 - Alerted by a comment on the BB that some of these had been released, I bought a couple of bottles from the Pegau cave in the village. I was told to make sure that it was not oxiginated, and the final words as I left were "bonne chance"!
I felt that I had been warned, and as it happened the wine turned out to be a disappointment.
The colour was purple, with perceptible browning. On the nose it offered little, except alcohol. It recognisably tastes like a Pegau - liquorice and dark (orange?) chocolate come to mind. The finish is weak, but alcohol is again evident. I don't think it is particularly high in alcohol, I just think that the fruit has faded and is now insufficient to carry the alcohol. I felt the bottle was slightly oxidised, and perhaps slightly corked.
I have seen a very complimentary note elsewhere, so hopefully this is just a bad bottle. I will save my second bottle for a suitable offline.
