August 29, 2023 - Not the greatest Yquem tasted but giving a lot of pleasure still.
Very classic, textbook Yquem nose. Would have preferred maybe slightly more acidity on the palate
June 27, 2023 - Lovely, developed nose with layers of marmalade, dried apricot, honey, cinnamon and almond. Opulent but fresh on the palate with a great finish. Great but not mind-blowing wine. Less complex and intense than the 2006 tasted alongside.
WSET notes:
Medium amber.
Pronounced on the nose with marmalade, mushroom, hay, almond, dried apricot, caramel, honey, cinnamon. Fully developed.
Pronounced and sweet on the palate. Full body, high acidity, high alcohol, long finish.
Can drink now but has potential for aging.
May 13, 2023 - Arrived at the end of a pretty long lineup of a memorable wine lunch and albeit liquid gold is liquid gold our palate was well over fatigued to offer a proper note deserving to the royalty this wine is. Hopefully we will cross paths with it another day too .
November 5, 2022 - Aromatic nose of honeysuckle, apricot, orange peel, almond and five spice. Apricot, honey, orange peel and five spice on the palate. Very long finish. Exceptional balance. Served with a lemon Bundt cake.
October 1, 2022 - A fabulous drink. Orange peel, honey, caramel overtones, figs and brown sugar. Nicely balanced with a medium, not complex, body. For an off year, what more do you want?!?
May 14, 2022 - First d'Yquem I tried and I understand why all say this is the best. Even if this is an ok vintage, the wine is superior to any other good vintage non d'Yquem sauternes. Just the best sauternes out there based on this one. Will see how the 2001 is, great expectations based on this 2002!
December 20, 2020 - What is there to say?
October 31, 2020 - From demi-bouteille, tasted over two days ( day 1 via Coravin, and day 2 popped the cork )
+ Color : deep gold color with copper shine. When holding it against the light, it guilt up the entire room.
This came in at 14% alcohol, which shows in the glass, curtains of syrupy liquor glazed the glass
+ Nose : honey, wax, candied fruits ( peach ), marzipan ( almonds ), hint of vanilla, subtle woody, a herbarium of odors.
This is a wine you can smell for hours and still discover some minor extra notes during your journey
+ Taste : nice and greasy ( not sticky ! ), very syrupy, never gets boring, some spices at tip of your tongue.
Again, something you want to keep in your mouth as long as possible to enjoy and avoid sending it down
+ Finish : very pure, very long as well ( +10 sec ), subtle bitterness ( orange zest ), slightly heat from the alcohol level ( but it fits the picture )
I do often read that Sauternes wines are no longer in fashion with the "youth". Shame, they are missing out on a real threat.
But this is a wine that you have to give time ... close the blinds, ignite the fire place, maybe some candles, a good book or a great movie.
And then sip along a few glasses of this golden liquid .... in these harsh times, at least you can escape - if only for a few hours - from it all with Sauternes.

August 23, 2020 - lovely wine in an ordinary year - nice balance but not the most complex of wines - not for the long haul
March 3, 2020 - Yquem can still really shine in off years - this is so fresh, vibrant, and balanced it’s hard not to love. Fresh citrus, slightly tropical, fresh sugar and frangipane. Délectable 94-95
