Community Tasting Notes 9

February 15, 2021 - Terrific depth and length, this is not a wine you can sip without taking notice. A beguiling nose of honey, beeswax, tropical fruits, canteloupe, white flowers, peach, pineapple, topped by some leesy notes. The palate is incredibly fresh and airy; balanced; concentrated and effortless, it stretches long intermingling fresh strawberries, ripe orchard fruits, and flowers before ending with brown sugar apples and squeezed lemons. Apparently, the name derives from a Spa (Badstube) on the Mosel river - names checks out.

September 28, 2020 - A stunning combination of lush honey and flowers with tart apple and lemon curd with a long, lingering finish. Just a wonderfully balanced and complex wine.

January 22, 2020 - AP 16 14. I’ve given a score to this same AP twice so I won’t skew the number by adding an additional. But tasting notes are in line with my previous reviews. This time around it’s starting to develop a bit of depth and dimension from the previous tastings.

Sensationally nuanced and more versatile than a standard Auslese. Quite ripe and a hint of botrytis but not at all on the high side for the bottling. Juicy stone fruit and apples, brilliant acidity. Phenomenally drinkable and one of the best white cap bottlings I’ve had from Prum.

I know 2013 was a disaster for Prum from a quantity standpoint - not having the volume to even select for Kabinett or Spatlese from any of their vineyards. But the resulting “en bloc” pickings are all singularly unique and brilliant for this producer. A few places still have this for sale on the shelf and I highly recommend grabbing any you can find!

December 17, 2017 - If the Zeltinger Sonnenuhr is serene, pure, and happy to be in the background, this Badstube auslese has tang, zing, and demands to be noticed. Strong notes of green apple, this has more of the acidity that I expect from a 13 Riesling. The acidity is great with some buttered up pasta, but overall, I probably prefer the ZS at this stage. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

December 8, 2017 - This wine needs plenty of air for the fruit flavours to develop and the syrupy mouthfeel to recede. I suggest at least 2 hours of aeration, or decant it if possible. It is best served at room temperature (or just slightly lower than room temperature).

It keeps getting better later during the night. At its peak, it has plenty of peach, lime, ripe apple, fresh honey flavours. But it is not as ethereal as the better J J Prum auslese (e.g. Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel).
