Community Tasting Notes 1

October 7, 2019 - The grapes are sourced from organically farmed vineyards in the Montestefano Cru. Aged for 18 months in large oak botti casks. 13,5% alcohol. Tasted in a mini-vertical of Rivella Dolcettos 2017-2013.

Slightly translucent and quite extracted dark cherry red color with a deep core and somewhat brick-red rim. Ripe, dark-toned nose with aromas of wizened dark fruits, some sappy herbal tones, a little bit of extracted red fruits, light green notes of willow bark and a brambly hint of fresh dark raspberries. The wine is ripe, moderately full-bodied and quite sinewy on the palate with somewhat concentrated flavors of blackberries, some sour cherry bitterness, a little bit of sappy herbal greenness, light licorice tones, a developed hint of meaty umami and a fresh, brambly touch of raspberry. The wine is very structured with its high acidity and quite grippy, assertive tannins. The finish is noticeably grippy and slightly warm with intense flavors of sour cherries, some wild strawberries, a little bit of fresh raspberry, light sappy green tones, a hint of peppery spice and a touch of stony minerality. The overall feel is surprisingly tightly-knit and structure-driven for a Dolcetto at 6 years of age.

A real powerhouse of a Dolcetto and definitely the most impressive wine out of the Rivella Dolcetto vintages tasted between 2017-2013. Although the only one to exhibit any developed characteristics, this is still very youthful and tightly-knit still, at 6 years of age, and in dire need of further cellaring. Very concentrated and structured, this wine is capable of easily overwhelming many of the Barolo and Barbaresco wines from the more delicate end. Although quite drinkable already, expect the score to go up as the wine ages. Highly recommended.
