November 26, 2016 - For some reason Nero D'Avola has fallen out of favor with my palate. After a short decant the plum/cherry, earth and flesh nose did not do it for me. The palate is on the thin side and fairly tart, with cherry and earth dominating. Nothing wrong with this bottle, just not my cup of tea at this point.

July 24, 2016 - Really nice wine. Bright deep ruby red in color. The bouquet is of cherries, blackberries and some spice. In the mouth it is a bit fruit forward mostly of red fruits. Good trace of earthiness of spice, tobacco and cocoa. Medium finish

April 19, 2016 - Absolute bret bomb. I've smelled dirty diapers more aromatically attractive than this. Whoa.

February 24, 2016 - From an Enomatic machine: Lucent reddish ruby. Profound leafy boxwood, kind of perfume (red flowers) and sweet candy. A hint of h2s. Medium furry tannin, medium acidity, luscious m+ mixture of perfume flower, red fruit(raspberry) and leaves. Woody Oak in the short but sour finish. Heat in the stomach. Good balance, nice structure with tannin, clear aromas and good intensity, short finish, pleasant good complexity as a new wine. 87. "Italian Syrah".

June 6, 2015 - Light bodied, dark almost black. Not much fruit. Leather and garrigue, smooth tannins. Not at all what I expected.

May 25, 2015 - Very accessible, fairly modern-styled wine, with an attractive nose of cherries, strawberries, a hint of bacon; nicely balanced acidity, moderate drying tannins, prominent taste of sour cherry on the finish. Not terribly complex, but easy-drinking and goes well with and without food.

May 16, 2015 - Dark garnet red with vivid Crimson hue.
Showing aromas of coffee, roast meat, plum, toasty oak and sour cherry at the end.
Light and easy to drink on palate, along with plum, cherry and spicy oak. Drying finish with hints of roasted coffee.
It is a simple and rustic wine that drinking well now. A pretty good effort at this price point and very much reminds me of the entry Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

    March 31, 2015 - Aged for 12 months in barriques (20% new, 80% 2nd and 3rd use)

Dark and deep black cherry color with a hint of youthful blue. The nose is sweet, spicy and quite concentrated with opulent aromas of ripe dark berries, some chocolatey oak, a little bit of plummy dark fruit and other stone fruits, a hint of savory oak spice and a touch of smoke. The wine is full-bodied, rich and sweet-toned with dry and quite densely packed flavors of ripe dark forest fruits, some overripe cherries, a little bit of savory wood, light earthy spices and a hint of bitter dark chocolate. The wine is moderately high in acidity with surprisingly firm and grippy tannins. The finish is very tannic and grippy with dry, tightly-knit flavors of ripe black cherries, roasted Moroccan spices, some dark plums, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, a hint of savory oak spice, a hint of smoke and a touch of sweet chocolatey oak character. The alcohol lends some warmth to the aftertaste.

Contrasting the usually soft, sweet and simple style of Nero d'Avola, this is a surprisingly serious and structured effort with a lot of power, intensity and grip. The fruit is still quite sweet and juicy - which seems to be quite typical for the variety - and there is some obvious new oak character, but most of all, the wine is balanced and harmonious with terrific structure and good staying power. Perhaps a bit too young now, I could see this wine benefiting from additional aging, letting the tannins resolve a little and the oak integrate a bit better with the fruit. After all, unlike so many Nero d'Avola wines, this one actually seems to be capable of taking on some extended cellaring! Pricey for a Nero d'Avola at 17€, but delivers for the price.
