February 23, 2024 - This has a dark colour, and fairly intense, burly fruit with a rather earthy texture, from tannin, and a dry finish. A wine of character, but somewhat lacking in charm. It seems mature, but may develop further.

January 14, 2024 - 8th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, as bottle noted in August, generous for Gouges and good cut above 04 Vaucrains on same night. Upside, 12+ years. F (17.5).

December 2, 2023 - Until now, I have held off opening my bottles from Gouges, an estate famous for slow maturing bottles. This one is definitely ready to drink and I even thought I caught a whiff of cabbage on opening, which could be a precursor of decay. However this whiff was soon swamped by better aromas and we had a robust Burgundy showing sill fairly deep colour, medium++ body with still quite primary dark berry flavours, slightly earthy minerals, good roundness, depth, smooth texture, good balancing acidity and remains of well covered tannins on a quite firm finish. This is not the highly elegant and velvety type of Burgundy but it was a satisfying pairing for guinea fowl in a creamy whisky laced sauce. Very good.

August 22, 2023 - 7th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, step up from last October as this sidles slowly towards maturity and the tannins soften revealing an attractive and nuanced slightly sour black cherry core, fine minerality, long with decent mid palate heft, Gouges wines are always on the austere side but this is starting to betray the generosity of a fine vintage, upside, 15+ years. F (17.5).

@winebid bottle with a nice cork. Transformed with air! On the open this was high toned, crisp raspberry. Double decanted for fine sediment. Over next two hours it quickly picked up ludens cherry hard candy. Slurpable ?13.x%? with med/med+ acidity. A couple hours later and it was more blocky candy and not as pleasurable. We drank nearly all of it in the first 1-2 hours though, which was great. Has fruit, but concentration, structure and age-ability I haven’t gotten from New World. You can perceive a light sheen of unintegrated alcohol. ZW91-92. Looks like I paid $85 vs $150 going market price.
