May 17, 2019 - 26m in French and American oak. Then 3 years in bottle. Definitely not a modern expression. Opaque glass for the bottle. Again, surprising. Maybe not the highest level of excitement, but worth more inspection.
May 4, 2019 - Spanish Reds [5-Riojas & 1-Castilla y León] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): Generally, 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, & 5% Mazuelo "...estate grown & bottled. The vyds are located in the upper portion of the Rioja Alavesa, at an altitude of 1,200-1,800 ft. Grapes are de-stemmed & undergo fermentation at 86°F. The grapes then go through a 27-day maceration period with light pumping over, followed by malolactic fermentation." The wines age for 26-28 months in FR & AM oak barrels, ff'd by at least 3 yrs in the bottle. 148,000 cs made.
N: RIPE berries with undertones of vanilla?
P: MF body; RNDISH entry with NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by some astringent pucker which pretty much resolves by the LONG finish with a tangy/swtness & POSS incipient quasi-bitter flatness to the dusty tannins. For now, but should also make its 20th. 13.5% ABV; My VG+/EXC-. 93 pts Decanter's Tasting Panel [though later, 88 @ their '17 World Wine Awards], 93 WS, 92 WE @ $38, 91 Wine & Spirits, and 90 Guía Peñin. [This vendor's now $29.95 is as good as any of wine-searcher's offerings.]
Note: Also tasted 7/28/2018
April 28, 2019 - Austin Food & Wine Festival. Similar to my note last year in WSET Level 3.
April 18, 2019 - Fine Wines SG - “Judgement of Paris” Bordeaux Blend Dinner (The Communal Bistro Delicacy - CBD): A very big blackberry and stew. Quite cooked and cheesy
April 4, 2019 - Mature Rioja tasting: dark opaque red-purple
med- intensity aromas of red cherries, earth, toasted oak - but very tight
lean structured, dark red fruity flavours, good acidity level, firm tannins, sour dark plums, smoked meat, medium minus complexity, mint-eucalyptus tones, medium length sour roasted fruits finish and aftertaste
decant for 2-3 hours
can drink now - suitable for further ageing
April 3, 2019 - Very two dimensional and drab with no flavor complexity...super astringent, dry with no fruit in the beginning (85)....after it opens up, layers and layers of complexity, and fruit starts to show up—totally different wine (91)
March 23, 2019 - Used to be good. The latest 2005's I have had have been only average or had flaws. Seen many on sale for 15€ and will not purchase more. Previous vintages I used to like.
March 22, 2019 - Needs 3 hours+ aeration. Has aromas of dusty vanilla infused raspberries, strawberries and spice. Its juicy medium bodied spherical oaky vanillary, blue and red fruits palate has good delineation and acidity. Ends medium long oaky fruity and zingy. Food friendly! 13.5%. Is very young for a 14 year old wine. Excellent value too!
February 20, 2019 - Back in the 1980s in London Faustino I was one of my regular go-to wines, but this was my first bottle for at least 20 years. And I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed.
I decanted and then started to sip after about an hour. The initial impression is strongly acidic, a bit light on fruit and no complexity at all. It improves a bit so that at 3 hours the acidity has moderated a bit, and pleasant tannins have developed. But the fruit is rather thin. There's a fairly long dry finish.
There are Reservas for half the price that match this, and which are better straight from opening.
February 17, 2019 - A good Gran Reaerva, easy to drink, savory and complex an extra point for value
