February 11, 2015 - Nose: A rich bouquet of honey, light golden grapes, rich Sauternes (on the spicy side of the heavily botrytis) and some summer flowers. Then there is a spicy petrol base that works here. I've never had something like this in a cognac before, and it's not like petrol notes from some choice Islays, either. It's a curious nose. Dense. Some crystallized tropical fruit. Maybe it will open up even more with a few drops of water. (water) More of the tropical fruit and flower notes, and honey. Perhaps some star fruit. What a peculiar cognac! Really lovely liquid now that it's opened up even more.

Palate: Fascinating. Rich and silky. The initial burst of flavor is surprisingly sans fruit. There's a bold and magnificent petrol quality with the grassiness, and the alcohol is spicy. Big and hot, but still approachable for those brave of heart (and they will be rewarded for the journey.) The second wave bears more fruit, a touch of white peach flesh, golden grapes, light blue flowers, and little puffs of vanilla. (with water) Wow, for as much as water brought out fruit on the nose, the petrol and the grass are bolder along with sour fruit flowers and a quick hit of fruit. An enjoyable and serious brew.

Finish: The finish is fairly balanced and nothing overly sweet, thanks to the atypical notes. This is a quality spirit. I really struggled nosing and getting everything out of it for a long time. I kept slowly consuming the bottle, letting it sit at half-fill for a month or two just to see whether that would help it open up; it was incredibly tightly wound. I was ready to give up on it, realizing the great quality but frustrated by the challenge of it opening up. On a whim, I switched from my usual glencairn, which I use as my standard tasting glass for the sake of convenience, to a riedel xo cognac glass (a tulip shape with a narrower chimney) and everything just opened right up. This is one of those cases where certain glassware can make a huge difference. It was very good before, but now it's fully excellent. A-
