December 6, 2020 - Double decanted four hours before pouring. Notes of tobacco, spice, rose, and orange peel on the nose. Still has high acidity, tannins beginning to integrate. More tar and bitter cherry on the palate. Alcohol slightly noticeable, but not terribly out of balance. Definitely puts on weight with more air and the tobacco note becomes more pronounced.

October 23, 2020 - Very nice right now. Ripe red berries, some herbs. Quite integrated tannins. Good balance. Good pairing with mushroom risotto.

March 31, 2019 - Second of 2 bottles I bought in a large, private party purchase (hard to disentangle price for individual bottles, but I'd say in the range of $35-40). First bottle was about a year and a half ago, and I drank it as a PnP, which didn't work at all as the wine never opened. Barolos can be difficult wines for me: one of the other wines in that purchase was a '97 Sandrone Cannubis Boschis, which was one of my favorite wines of all time, with an extraordinary array of tasting notes that went on forever, but too often, I've found Barolos to be overwhelmed by tannins and acidity so that the fruit barely peeks out, almost undrinkable without food.
So I decanted this for a couple of hours tonight, and the tightness has greatly abated, but it hasn't been replaced by that much fruit. To be sure, there are notes of bittersweet cherry and some berries, but they are muted, and almost non-existent on the nose. The wine is visually very light, easily mistaken for a pinot. I'm really surprised by the reviews calling this a "modern" style; to me, that means fruit-driven and oaky, neither of which I find to be present here. I do get some tar, but no roses, orange blossoms or other notes associated with the more interesting examples of the varietal, nor the licorice, baking spices, etc. in the professional reviews.
To summarize, after this decant, this is pleasant enough to drink, but pretty unremarkable. There is some tannic structure and acidity, though not overwhelmingly so after my decant, so it's possible that this wine might improve, whether on night 2 or in a couple of years, but at this point, I'm not sensing the fruit here that makes that seem likely.1 person found this helpful Comment -
