December 28, 2021 - 2nd bottle from a half case bought a few months ago. I was never a fan of 1985 as a vintage (although it was considered excellent) and my notes are peppered with comments about the lack of tannins and excess sweetness. At the time the 82s were a similar price and far better. Double decanted and then drunk immediately. This bottle even better than the first. Base of neck level. Big nose of earthy, truffly sous bois at first which then reveals sea breeze and oyster shells, and finally clean blackcurrant and cedar. Beautifully balanced light to medium weight body with typical 1985 sweetness and good length. Just enough bitterness on the finish to offset the sweetness. A lovely moreish wine that I could (and may) sit here and drink the whole bottle myself without food!. Sublime Lafite like understatement; which is appropriate given Lafite was my favourite 85. Smoky aroma left in the empty glass. Glorious.

November 24, 2021 - Clear dark red. Rich nose, black fruit, coffee, leather and a bit of old hardwood. Dry rich berry and coffee flavours and a long dry textured finish.

November 19, 2021 - First bottle from a half case bought a few months ago based on good notes here and not having had Gruaud 85. At the time the 82s were a similar price and far better. Gentle clean nose of blackcurrant and cedar, beautifully balanced light to medium weight body and good length. A lovely moreish wine. October 9, 2021 - Tonight we tasted this from a 375ml small format split (shown left), ideal for simple casual sipping with cheeses and snacks, but less than ideal for aging / cellaring. Its time to drink these up, they are still holding on at 36 years, amazingly, but past their prime, showing their age and continuing to diminish from aging.

The fill level was ideal for its age, to be expected, near the bottom of the neck, the label and foil were in good condition, and the cork was also ideal, especially for its age.

Showing its age a bit as the fruit has fallen off a bit and the dark ruby garnet colored is showing a bit of brickish rust color with a bit of opacity - medium bodied, this opened with a hint of that fragrant floral bouquet which is giving way to more earthy leather and tones of mushroom and tapenade.

(Château Gruaud Larose) Funny, coffee ground nose that blows off; eucalyptus, minty, elegant, herbaceous fruit, intriguing stuff; medium finish
