May 21, 2019 - The power is not strong anymore, but the complexity and delicacy of this vintage is mature and retold in every sip. Great experience.

January 19, 2019 - Second time I’ve had this 82 and compared to others, this clearly disappoints. I’m not very familiar with Ausone but I can’t help feeling that Lafleur clearly trumps Ausone. In any case, as some of my fellow Cellar trackers have said, the noses promises but the palate falters. Nose of plums dipped in caramel, deep ruby red, some dust and red berries but the palate is tight, even after 3 hours in decanter. The wine is slightly flat, one dimensional despite some silkyness to its texture, decent finish, medium bodied. Much less beautiful or complex versus other Pomerols.

May 24, 2018 - I really *want* to like Ausone from this period but I've never had one that was especially compelling. Same story here. The aromatics promise a bit more than the wine ends up delivering - has some cabernet franc funk and campfire scents. The palate is just generic red fruit inflected with some old driftwood. The only hint that this is from a ritzy terroir is the texture, which is plush and enveloping, like sinking into a beanbag chair. But instead of showing more layers as it develops in the glass, the flavors turn a little weedy.

April 21, 2018 - Decanted for dinner later tonight; lightly colored ruby in the glass. Nose is a little reticent on opening, but the wine seems sound.

Sweet/ripe black & red fruits on the palate, with adequate acidity and decent persistence. This is a wine for contemplation as opposed to "shock & awe", but I like it quite a bit right now. It is destined to be paired with a dry-aged ribeye tonight, and I think it will hold up it's side of the pairing ;^)

March 19, 2018 - 1982 Bordeaux Horizontal (Bar Boulud): Beautiful nose, classic, elegant, big perfume. Lush blackberry fruit with damp forest floor. Fresh and dense, although there is a tobacco and slightly herbal edge to this too. Comparatively the nose on the ‘82 Cheval Blanc in the next glass renders this quiet. On the palate this is ripe red berry fruit and is sweeting up at the edges. Good blackberry in the core. Round and long finish. This is beautiful, but has a darkness that requires a little more attention and patience than the Cheval, which is very showy. The first time I had this wine three years ago I remember a distinct wintergreen and mint note on the nose that I was looking forward to but didn't get out of this one tonight.
