Community Tasting Notes 3

August 26, 2021 - Decanted 2.5 hrs, dark and concentrated, I might have guessed 2013 based on the color alone.

On the nose, coffee, mocha, red raspberry, fresh crushed blackberries, a hint of bramble I always find in the Seavey wines, with more time a floral perfume pops up during swirling. A smooth but short and hollow finish with only a hint of unsweetened blackberry jam and a touch of eucalyptus. 95 on the nose, 91 at best on the palate.

When I tried this before, it was a tannic beast, but now the tannins have receded. The oak is still apparent in the heavy coffee notes. Plenty of acid indicating this can age many more years, though the acid and oak are still overpowering the fruit. This commands a hefty price tag, and while clearly a well made wine, it’s simply not for me. I managed to pick this up at auction at a significant discount, so not a complete loss. I really wanted to like this more, but alas ‘twas not to be. 93 for now, room for 96 (maybe) in 5 years if the fruit can show through.

May 6, 2017 - About 3 hours in the decanter, little to no sediment. Wonderful aroma going into the decanter, similar reaction during initial tasting. Surprisingly soft for Seavey, not the typical tannin bomb I've come to expect. Very approachable early, typical for 2012. Not as much depth and intensity as I'd expect at this price point. May not hold up in the long run. Still, an excellent wine, though, overpriced.

July 10, 2016 - Napa Visit 2016; 7/10/2016-7/13/2016: Most structure in what we tasted @ Seavey. Deep, deep layers of black and some red fruit hiding under a smoothing tannic structure. A monster if left to age. I can see what Parker likes here, but price is a big factor. 95+ for now.
