November 20, 2021 - Excellent precision and cut with penetratingly intense sweet sour citrus juice. Fine bubbles and mineralogy. Auto tingly fresh and tangy. With a long Finding. Wow

a perfect nose. lemon cest, milk chocolate. Great acidity that I guessed 1996 right but I thought more PN and not a BdB (Cristal Vinotheque or VVF). Nice stage now with finally some aging signs. Precise but powerful finish, lasting for over an half hour. 98

Drank it just before the 1996. This one is really good and close to his peak. Still lemon notes but also some exotic fruits and roasted aromas but not the length and concentration of the 1996. The acidity of the 1996 gives unbelievable length and freshness. 1997 should be drunk nowadays and the 96 is for the next 3 decades. It opened up a little bit compared two years ago. Some depth giving secondary notes fight with the brilliant acidity. Getting balanced. 98

October 8, 2021 - A lost Friday afternoon gathering – how to semi cheat in a blind tasting (Black Salt, Washington DC): Expressive nose displaying concentrated yellow fruit, fresh apple, baked apple, pear, lemon curd, light caramel, white flower, oyster shell, burnt sugar and crushed rocks. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe pure yellow fruit, rich and oily yet incredibly focused and precise, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral, and a long concentrated pure yellow fruit driven finish with oyster shell at the end. This is perfectly mature yet pure and energetic example. It beautifully evolves in the glass. Exceptional showing.

September 10, 2021 - Deep, intense, youthful. A powerful Champagne with great breed and class and just beginning to show some secondary's but this should be held much longer in the cellar. 94+

August 27, 2021 - I had unloaded this bottle to the wine shop because all my other ‘96 Salons were disappointingly dull. Not this one. One of only two in the group to display any real style and originality. The slight note of oxidation is not too distracting and even adds a bit of welcome complexity. Nevertheless there is a certain lack of clarity and focus I would expect in a luxe champagne in what should be it’s glory days.

August 11, 2021 - A very fine champagne for sure this Salon 1996. Had as an aperitif and it felt still painfully young like a coiled spring. Very high acidity, extremely racy. While certainly no disappointing (unlike quite a few Salons I had in the past) it to me doesn't live up to the price tag as to my palate I actually prefer the DP 96 standard release for example. It would however be tremendous fun to try this Salon again in around 10-20 years and see where it has gone. 95 with upside.

July 23, 2021 - A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Champagne and Burgundy (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Perfectly mature yet energetic nose displaying perfectly ripe yellow fruit, baked apple, a hint of orange peel, lemon curd, honey, caramel, white flower, white pepper, burnt sugar and crushed rocks. Excellent concentration, very finely layered ripe yellow fruit, rich yet pure and precise, perfect balance, fine generous mousse, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long perfectly ripe yellow fruit driven finish with honey and crème brulee at the end. This is a beautifully mature example that is drinking well. This is a perfectly mature yet fresh and energetic example. The 96 Salon seems to be entering the maturity.
