May 17, 2019 - Willamette Valley May 2019; 5/17/2019-5/18/2019: Had tried the luxury cuvee version of this wine previously and it had left me cold. Today I liked it better, but the setting had something to do with it. Deep intense purple color. Beefy, olive, and pepper nose. Pepper and spice on the palate. Really nice!
April 30, 2019 - This was a very interesting and different style of syrah. Initially softer on the nose than I was expecting, showing red cherry, red berries and earth. The longer it was open, the more the nose switched towards black cherry and the earth notes and even light spices started to come out. Medium bodied and very rounded, open and accessible. Black cherry and some hints of red cherry upfront with lots of brightness. Mid-body is expressive, showing a bit more depth and adding slightly darker black fruit. Earth and spices show on the back along with moderate, but very fine grained tannins.
Like the winemaker's Antica Terra pinot noirs, this wine is all about balance. If you're looking for a full bodied, powerful syrah with lots of gamey notes or huge amounts of earthiness, tannins and spices, this isn't the wine for you. At first, I wasn't sure I would even identify it as syrah, if tasting blind. However, the longer it was open, the more background notes started to show up through the middle. It might not fit the standard model for "California syrah", "Washington State syrah" or even "Northern or Southern Rhone". All I can say is the fruit expression was excellent and I really enjoyed drinking it and will need to try it a few more times in a few more vintages before I can truly express an informed opinion.
March 24, 2019 - One hour open (slow ox, no decant) before drinking. Deep dark magenta color. Jasmin, violets, dates, black cherry, vinyl, blood (iron) on the rich, fruit forward and somewhat brooding nose. Smooth, dry palate, with good acidity that lingers on the tongue. Soft tannins on the medium+ finish.
This is very nice, but missing some of the classic ashy/meaty Syrah notes. There could have been a bit more tannic structure as well. In any event, it’s a nice wine, like most of Maggie Harrison’s.
January 6, 2019 - Winorama: A winter in Wineland III; 1/4/2019-1/13/2019 (Portland/Willamette, Eureka, Napa): Have been drinking a lot of Northern Rhone of late and I appreciated some of those notes here. There's some of that meatiness. Still kindof darker fruits. It's nice and well put together. Has a certain class to it. Very young so will be sitting on these for awhile.
November 17, 2018 - Some Lillians have been silly good to me, but this one was just ok. A little angular, with some looseness in the mid-palate.
September 25, 2018 - At a walk around tasting. This is delicious. Well balanced. Meaty, chocolate, darker fruit. Herbal note. Nice tannin. This should age well but is fun to drink now.
May 10, 2018 - Excellent. Needs 30 mins to air but then great. More like a French hermitage or Cote roti than an American Syrah. Airy, olive nose. Dry mothfeel. Delicious.
August 11, 2017 - Young but I didn't wait to let it open. Dark fruit bacon on the palate. Classical styling of Syrah. Excellent
February 19, 2017 - A light syrah. Well balanced with red fruits, cherry, and chocolate. Surprising how the wines tastes like a cabernet. I would not drink it with a dinner as the wine is soft and elegant. Best to have with appetizers and cheese so it stands on its own.
January 28, 2017 - Tasted more like a Cabernet than a Syrah. Balanced and open. I have one bottle left and will wait a few years. Open one if you have several.
