Community Tasting Notes 2

February 16, 2017 - Very translucent, luminous cherry red with a developed brick-orange hue. The nose feels quite dry and savory with restrained, dark-toned aromas of licorice, smoke, some minty herbal tones, a little bit of tar, a hint of loamy earth and a touch of resin. Compared to the vintage 1978 that was tasted alongside this wine, the nose feels slightly more restrained but also a bit more nuanced. On the palate the wine feels a bit broader, richer and more developed than the still very youthful but also quite lean and linear vintage 1978. The wine is medium-to-moderately full-bodied and silky on the palate with quite tertiary and somewhat sweet-toned flavors of slightly wizened black cherries, ripe yet bitter sour cherries, some tarry notes, a little bit of earthy, gravelly minerality and a hint of tobacco. The wine is moderately high in acidity with still quite firm and grippy tannins. The finish is dry, tarry and quite gently grippy with long and rather spicy flavors of sour cherries, tart cranberries, some earthy tones, a little bit of gravelly minerality, a hint of wizened red cherries and a touch of smoke.

A fine, harmonious and nuanced Barbaresco that seems to be at its peak. The wine still retains fine a sense of structure and although the flavors don't feel as intense as in the vintage 1978, they show a bit more depth and development. Most likely the wine won't hold on for much longer, so there is no real need to cellar these further.

November 19, 2016 - Excited to try this, but alas corked. Strong note of cinnamon with TCA. Did not blow off with decanting or time
