August 7, 2023 - Two years ago a previous bottle of the 2012 Ca' del Baio Asili showed a medium intensity nose, and a still relatively pronounced tannic structure, medium acidity (a little lower than expected for a nebbiolo), and on the medium intensity but full bodied palate I found some intriguing metallic clay notes as well as some signs of development. A different Ca' del Baio bottle - also from 2012 but from their plot in the Marcarini Cru, which nowadays the winery uses for their Autinbey bottlings - proved a bit nicer: better balanced thanks to more freshness, and maybe a little less reserved in terms of flavor profile, but also with the same metallic clay notes. I had already noticed this small difference in freshness and austerity when tasting both these wines at the winery back in 2015.

The tasting of my final Asili 2012 bottle last week revealed textbook Nebbiolo characteristics (not too much tar though, and also no longer any metallic clay notes) but confirmed the slightly underwhelming impression I already had 2 years ago. Tannins were still present albeit meanwhile a little more softened, but intensity and complexity of aromas and flavors on the nose and the palate were somewhat disappointing (in particular given the reputation of the Asili cru) and a little too austere or middle-of-the-road for my liking.

One of the sisters from Ca del Baio told me back in 2015 their Asili plot is quite a bit lower (about 100m) and therefore warmer than their Marcarini plot, and suggested the scorching hot summer of 2012 may have resulted in less freshness in their Asili compared to their Marcarini bottles.

Maybe the 2012 Asili was really only going to blossom aromatically in a few years from now. Still, I believe my last bottle of Marcarini 2012 was indeed the better choice for keeping a few more years - curious what it will taste like when I open it somewhere between 2025 and 2030.

January 10, 2023 - Murstein. Fin nese.

December 4, 2022 - Found earlier bottles to be disjointed and hot. This is pulling together and the alcohol is now better integrated. I like bright cherry/pomegranate on the attack, and the tar on the finish. But it’s a tad too extracted for my taste, and loses some charm for it.

March 6, 2020 - Notes of plum, cherry, licorice, but not much intensity and not much complexity. Very feminine - deft, graceful, refined - but not much depth. An ok wine. Barely a shadow of sediment. 14.5% alc. With homemade pasta. Recommended with Reservations.

September 21, 2018 - Pretty good now, will probably get better with time!
