November 23, 2022 - 20 Vintages of Troplong Mondot: This was a trainwreck of a vertical tasting. An average of meager 86.8 pts, only 6 wines with a rating of more than 90pts. Almost all wines pre 2017 and a winemaker/style change have dried out. Too much extraction and heavy oak treatment produced wines that did not age well, have no fruit and charm left. I don’t have group ratings but the sentiment in the room was similar (this was the fastest tasting ever with this group). It was a root day but that can’t explain everything. Also, the provenance or storage of the bottles was no issue (all bought En Primeur, stored perfectly since). Troplong Mondot seems to be a victim of a series of bad choices, mainly the wrong consultant. Luckily, the future looks brighter.

TN: Medium expressive nose with ripe dark berries. On the palate there is a lot of ripe dark berries, some earthy and chocolate notes. A bit velvety texture good freshness and not drying out. The first decent wine in the vertical which is not already dead or half dead. But it is slightly too ripe and shows alcohol (I‘m quite sensible to that, not everybody at the table noticed the alcohol.

November 1, 2022 - This was a tannic mess. Sorry, but this was horrible. Opened and decanted at 4 PM, initially served at 7 PM, where it was universally despised by 6 experienced tasters. Took the remaining 5 oz home and tried about 11 PM. Still brutally tannic with no redeeming qualities. Dumped.

October 1, 2022 - 3rd bottle of a case of 12. Very attractive warm fruit on the darker red side of the spectrum, red & black berries. Touch of oak. But remarkably drying tannins that dominate the wine. Too early? Will the fruit outlive the tannins?

September 28, 2022 - What a wildly beautiful Napa from St.Emilion. Licorice, mint, dense black fruit, incredibly smooth and dense. Beautiful weightlessness that is missing in younger Tropolongs (I'm looking at you 2009 Troplong). 60+ seconds finish. Great now, great in 10 years

September 6, 2022 - Cellared since release, perfect cork and fill. Pop and pour. Deep dark red to rim. Doesn’t show much until 3 hours in, when ripe dark fruits, licorice, moist earth, mocha and oak begin to emerge. Very full-bodied, feels highly extracted, lots of ripe fruit, good balancing acidity, prominent tannins, a long finish, but not fully integrated. Put in the fridge overnight and the next day the pieces seem to be fitting together better. Excellent on day 2, expect even more in 5-10 years.

(Château Troplong Mondot) Deep red violet color; lovely deep cherry, cassis and vanilla nose; rich, concentrated but not overly extracted cassis palate with structure and cedar notes; long finish (definitely an ager) (90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon)
