September 14, 2019 - Between this and the 05 Cimarossa Ponente, these were my wines of the night. Love these bottles from La Rioja Alta. Dark black fruit, hint of sweet fig, chocolate, tobacco, herbs, spiciness on the finish. Elegant on the back end, yet had just enough grip and jagged edges that it makes you keep coming back for more. Nice. I'd really like to buy cases of these and just put them away and forgot it existed for 25 more years or so. Fat chance.... I'm really quite amazed at the 90 and 91 ratings here... Way underscored IMHO.

August 30, 2019 - Spain Trip (w/ some Rioja gems): This is a young Gran Reserva with all the signature traits of wines of this category. Not something I would want to drink every day, especially when they are this young but still a well-crafted wine that can reach higher highs in 20 years.

TN: Rather muted nose, improving a bit with time but never fully convincing. Much more expressive palate displaying mint, anise, coffee, dark fruit at first then clearly moving towards red berries, red currant, lots of tobacco. Nicely complex, high aromatic intensity but a soft, light body, good precision, fine tannins und a sharp, well-integrated acidity which will allow decades of ageing, medium finish.

Decanting: PnPed. Good from the start but I guess that one, two hours of decanting would have helped to improve the nose.

August 26, 2019 - Quite versatile, although not really expressive. At times a vanilla touch, later more mineral. Fruit is a mix of red and black cherries. Mixed herbs. Nice finish with leathery notes and good length, but balance not ideal with too much acidity. Harsh tannins, although with goodwill can be seen as a feature. Nothing wrong in a pretty good spot probably. But ultimately lacks character and feels somewhat lost. Too light to be big and bold, too harsh to be fine and elegant.

August 24, 2019 - Coravin: Expressive nose - mushroom, vanilla and dark fruit. Similar on the palate. Juicier than the 2004 which I've just had (also out of Coravin). Fine but not yet soft tannins. Long finish.
Decanted, initially - Dark ruby. Similar to above. Also buttery notes and a little smoky meat on nose, m+ acidity. More butter on the palate. More to come I think. 89-91.

August 11, 2019 - Developing nicely since last bottle opened about a year ago. Still very youthful and will be a while before this really starts to develop. Somewhat less dense than the 04 and 05 but with classic LRA character, great acidity and mature fruit which sits nicely against the sweet American oak. I always enjoy the 904 especially with food. 91-92
