March 22, 2020 - Had my daughter and her boyfriend over for a wine & pizza night. Opened a 2016 Carter OG, 2013 Dunn Howell Mountain and a 2012 Shafer Hillside Select. It was very interesting as my daughter ranked them Carter/Shafer/Dunn, her BF had it Dunn/Shafer/Carter and I had them Shafer/Dunn/Carter. It primarily came down to a preference for sweetness, with Carter being substantially sweeter than Dunn. We slow ox’d all 3 bottles for 3 hours and drank over 3 more hours. The Carter lost a little sweetness at the very end and the HSS got very, very good at the 5 hour mark. I absolutely love the Dunn, and over time it might catch the HSS. Since I’m definitely not a Napa fruit bomb lover the Dunn was very good by comparison. The Dunn is such a unique Napa wine at 13.9% ABV that I’m excited to see how it will develop over the next decade.

February 9, 2020 - Tobacco, leather, black fruit slightly underripe (a good thing), dusty earth. Pretty much perfect Howell Mountain. Loved it.

December 21, 2019 - Tight when first opened but beautiful dark purple color. After decanting for 3 hours, the wine softened dramatically and flavors of cherry that transitioned to dark chocolate and almond and eventually mint appeared. Long finish. Great wine.

November 17, 2019 - This is truly a great wine, though a little overpowering at first due to the strong tannins. Lots of dark fruit and earth notes, but very smooth and well structured. Definitely needs several hours exposure to air prior to drinking, not a good candidate for a pop n pour. What surprised me the most was the balance of this wine. I expect this wine to continue to improve over time as the intense tannins start to soften.

April 19, 2019 - Some Wine Before/During/After a Seder (The Krengels - Bannockburn IL): Small glass, brief note. Lots of great stuff here, but this is just hinting at its real potential. 92+ point potential, at a minimum needing until 2025.
