January 14, 2017 - Medium body in a classic Rioja style, well-integrated oak, dry black fruit, very nice.

April 1, 2016 - Ruby red with rich cherry and berry aromas and flavors, some oak and leather notes coming; medium bodied, smooth, soft, some tartness, acidity; clean finish.

September 26, 2015 - I've long admired Bodegas Altanza for its dedication to producing wines of extraordinary balance, mixing the old and the new into a synthesis of great modern Rioja. The Valvarés lacks the subtlety and refinement of the Lealtanza line, and it pushes the boundaries further into a New World style with an unabashed emphasis on chocolate, vanilla, licorice, and cola, but it still fits well into the Altanza profile, just in a bolder way. The fruit is in the background, but there's a lot of it, dark cherry and red berries, with some tartness to offset the sweetness, and with time smoky, meaty notes emerge, along with new leather, to bring added complexity, and it comes to resemble Aussie Shiraz, in a good way, then eventually less fruity southern French Syrah. Fresh and vibrant, silky and luscious, this just works, even if it can be too much of a good thing, even if it's a little too modern, a bit too new, for its own good.
