July 4, 2019 - Fascinating nose : lemon balm, clam juice, rose, pepper, lemon thyme, bay leaf, candied lemons. Medium weight, quirky flavors of petrol, rose and white flowers, decent acidity, but that petrol note is back on the finish, with a teaspoon of my grandmothers lanolin moisturizer. Like eating wild herbs growing in the cracks on the pump island. Gruner is usually versatile; this one is a tough match. I settled on steamers in a smoky tarragon broth, cooked on a wood grill over applewood, with a charred scallion butter dip. Mellowed the wine and highlighted a sweet herbaceousness, instead of fuel and skin cream.

June 9, 2018 - The wine looks straw colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like diesel and rose. It tastes like ethanol, hazelnut, hay/straw and honeysuckle. The body is medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has high acidity.

May 20, 2017 - Bitter and dry, especially on the finish. Has some drive and verve, but seems to lack a bit of concentration. Some quince and pear notes. A "typical" Gruner? ...just not too interesting to me. QPR doesn't seem too great.

Apparently this is supposed to be a quintessential Gruner... or at least an epitomization of one. Frankly, I hope not. As a scientific reference, I suppose it serves that purpose. But it lacks body and depth to the point that the only thing I remember is the dryness on the back end.

A 2015 Williams Selyem Gruner served alongside the Pichler proved to hold more interest.

September 18, 2015 - Wachau - fine wines from the difficult 2014 vintage, and some other treasures; 9/14/2015-9/18/2015: Nice caramel note on the nose; big-bodied, tropical (passion) fruit hints on the balanced, slender, lithe entry; long, linear, continuum from the attractively acidic mid-palate through to the slightly bitter, long finish. A definite notch up from the 2014 Steinertal GV 90-93P
