98/1OO

July 4, 2020 - OooK. So this is a very nice wine ; smooth tannins, quite complex taste of mixed grape varieties in the mouth and a bit of development. But, I have always found better examples of CNF from Pegau and ClosDePapes ; collected a lot of B over the years and found that it is very hard to predict when it is best (current hypothesis is 15 years not 10) and it’s peaks have not been competitive in spite of it being dearer. But maybe I am missing something?

July 1, 2020 - Drank over a Saturday evening as the lock down continues to deplete my cellar.

The color is pale(ish) ruby going to tawny. Still a decent level of color though for a 20 year plus CDP.

The nose is all about earth, leather, soy , herbs (so called garrigue) and even some gamey notes (from the Mouvedre?). The nose is definitely fully mature and even shows some sign of getting on in years....

Medium bodied on the palate with surprisingly decent structure given the aromatics. Similar flavor characterisitcs on the palate with a medium to medium plus finish. Previous bottles (tasted 5-10 years ago ) finished longer.

Few CDP's age as well as Beaucastel and this bottle drank very well- food friendly and savory.

I would not tempt fate further though and will definitely drink up my last bottle soon.

PS- this was purchased on release and was stored properly

June 30, 2020 - Last Tuesday Supper Club (One Penny Red, Summer Hill): Earthy, funky, wet, gamey, baked spices, garrigue, leather, with time some blackberry and (think Grenache) red berries show through. Juicy, spicy, alcohol heat, plenty of tannins still, baked fruits are medium minus intensity flavour. Liquorice as well. Has potential to age further. Grenache notes grow with time s well. Long.

June 29, 2020 - CT Virtual Tasting. While not as wow as the bottle in 2011, this was still outstanding and a pleasure to drink. I'd mark it on the downward side of the maturity curve, but expect that bottles that are not affected by some of the heavy Brett or bottle variation should give good drinking experience. I'd give it 15-30 min to breathe to really bring out the bright fruit, and watch out for heavy sediment.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) One of the few wines that I have subsequently acquired in quantity, which I first tasted in an impressive mini-vertical, also taking in the 1999, 2000 and 2001 - followed by the same vintages of Vieux Télégraphe. It was stunning then, and on this tasting it remains so. It has only a moderately deep, gently maturing colour. The nose does have some baked fruit elements to it, which I commented on when I last tasted this wine, but unlike some other wines in this tasting it is not the predominant feature. There is a twiggy, Grenache-fruit element to it, as well as roasted meats, and exotic notes of cloves and curry spices. The palate carries richness, but it also carries excellent acidity, and a slightly more backward feel than many of its peers. It has a lovely broad presence in the mouth though, and although it shows tannic grip and definition it also has a complete although very masculine feel to it. Delicious wine with fabulous potential for the future; I expect this will drink well for well over a decade yet, if not for two.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) My first bottle from my case. A deep, rich hue, a dark red-black colour, almost opaque. The nose is already complex, showing some early secondary characteristics. It is fury and feral, deep, rich and meaty. There is still some primary, Grenache-cherry fruit beneath all this though. Rich, deeply flavoured and brimming with roasted, meaty fruit, the palate has a baked, warm-vintage character. This has a full-on structure, plenty of firm tannin, and a lingering finish. Excellent potential, and certainly for the long haul.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) A youthful, deep red hue here. The colour suggests a year or two of bottle age. A lovely nose showing complexity; minerals, dense red fruits, with a gamy edge. A vibrant palate, with the fruit showing purity although it has a full, rounded, gamy-tarry character. This is textured, mouthfilling, with very ripe tannins showing on the endpalate. Lovely acidity. In fact a very lovely wine that simply exudes class. Needs 8-10 years.
