April 8, 2022 - Dinner with Joyce, Martin and Chad (Casa Esperanza): 4 years on from the last bottle, and this is still showing on the youthful side. It was very good indeed, but still a touch rough around the edges, with sharp elbows here and there; it only really starting to show well after a good amount of time in the decanter as well - perhaps an hour or so. The nose on first pour was perched somewhere between adolescence and maturity, with notes of blueberry pie and stewed plums, earth and spice, and then a twist of menthol and eucalyptus around the edges - a lovely nose, just starting to take on earthier, meatier, more savoury tones. The palate was a bit tight at first too, with the acid and tannic structure of the wine feeling a bit obvious. With time though, it unfolded into a lovely mouthful of fresh plums and blueberries playing against a backdrop of earth and warm spice, with a gentle meatiness just creeping in towards a nice long finish alongside a little bittersweet dark chocolate twist. A very solid and elegantly built Shiraz. Powerful yet quiet, and wonderfully fresh and balanced at the same time, this is a lovely wine just about coming into its own. I would give remaining bottles another 3-5 years before broaching again.

October 3, 2021 - Huge nose of blueberry/blackberry pie with hints of vanilla, integrated oak, and black pepper. The palate is explosive and rich with dark blue/black fruits that coat the, now resolved, and integrated tannins. This is a spectacular wine in its prime and am very grateful to have experienced it.

September 17, 2021 - An elegant beauty. Lovely fruits and acidity. Like it much more than 2006 Glaetzer Amon-Ra.

June 14, 2021 - The old saying, the who patiently wait get rewarded must have tried this 17 year old Shiraz. While this has mellowed with age, it has turned into the a unique, delicious wine. A blend of plum and dark cherry fruit with ridiculously smooth tannins, complexity of black pepper, fig, espresso and hints of chocolate on the finish. If you want a sophisticated Shiraz, just wait 17 years!

June 12, 2021 - Screwcap, 14.5% alc. Dark red, tawny at rim.

A rich and full-on aroma displaying blackberry, mint, leather, chocolate, varnish, banana, pan juices, and glossy oak. It’s all there.

Expectedly, there is a rather significant oak presence, however there is also a lot of fruit to carry it. The wine hits the palate and immediately floods all corners of the mouth with rich, glossy, flavour. The tannins are resolved and in balance, and powdery in texture. The length is impressive, finishing fruity but framed by oak.

Opinion: Not the brute it once was. This is a luxurious oak-drenched Barossa shiraz. At 17 years, it’s in good drinking form. This wine should hold for at least another 7-8 years, though I wouldn’t expect it to improve from here.
