Community Tasting Notes 6

September 29, 2019 - Followed from decant and 12 degrees. Nose pops out of the glass right from the start with lush dark berries such as blackberry, forest berry and blueberry. Salvia, smoke, menthol, smoked meat, charcuteries, bacon, earth, liquorice, pepper and lots more. You can sense the whole cluster-winemaking but it's nicely integrated and simply adds complexity and austerity. I'm frankly quite surprised how ready this feels since tasting the '17 a couple of weeks ago, a wine that for me was nowhere near ready.
High quality tannins, balanced acidity. Long aftertaste. Really impressive and totally helps me to understand the fuss and comparisons to northern Rhône. This wine can go a lot longer, of course, but drinks SO well already.

January 27, 2017 - Colour between dark red and purple. Cool and fresh expression of Syrah, blackberry, black currant, olives, herbs, lots of forest notes, some charcuterie and liquorice. Elegant and refined.
Energetic lemon-like acidity, fine youthful tannins, juicy but definitely very young. Cool fruit, herbs, forest floor, salt and liquorice. Perhaps a bit tart on the palate but overall highly drinkable already, especially when the temperature is around 17-18 degrees. Medium long aftertaste. I gave this a 3-4 hour decant and the wine just kept getting better during the evening and still delivered pretty much the same experiance three days later. If you have a lot of bottles it definitely doesn't hurt to try but otherwise I would advice to hold for atleast 5 years or so.

August 25, 2016 - A private dinner (Restaurant Semilla *, Brooklyn, NYC, USA): Labeled Sonoma Coast rather than North Coast, but I will record it here; 12.2% ABV. Ever so slightly funky on the nose, but otherwise very pure and elegant, floral, good definition in the fruit, hint of pepper, gentle phenolics, lovely length. Energetic but relaxed, light but with good intensity. So eminently drinkable, so successful as a vin de soif, that you almost forget how refined it is.

April 11, 2016 - Nose: There is a coolness to the nose with dark red cherries, violets, cranberries, bitter chocolate, mineral notes, herbs, and baking spices.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and chewy tannins. The structure is clearly youthful along with dark red cherries, bitter chocolate, mineral notes, herbs, baking spices, and cranberries.

Overall: This is a lovely young Syrah. It's well balanced with a cool, yet ripe quality to the fruit.

February 28, 2016 - California and Rhône Syrah (SF Wine Trading Company): Deeply saturated core. Blackberry jam scents. Sweeter profile than any of the French wines but not overripe. Medium weight, polished and smooth. Some herbs, cranberry acidity, grainy tannins. OK but not particularly well knit at this point (not that it needs to be at this age).
