July 14, 2021 - Bordeaux 2000 - 48 Reds: All tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) It´s a good vintage but not on par with more recent great vintages like 09/10/15/16. Why? A smaller group of top wines reaching lower highs and in general a tad less depth, purity and finesse. 2) Right bank is ready, the left bank still needs time to integrate and open up. 3) Not much tertiary aromas yet - peak drinking window at least 10 years away for most wines. 4) 2000 is a bit a cooler vintage which is great for the right bank (not too much ripeness). 5) Winners? Pomerol with the highest ratings. Le Pin (97+ pts) leading the pack for me (narrowly beating the consensus winner Pavie (97 pts).

More information, top and worst 10 lists, appellation rankings, out- and underperformer from five participants in the story link. As always, in such tastings (lots of wines, not a lot of time per wine, not decanted) the ranking of wines/appellations might be more informative than the scores.

TN: Like many left banks rather muted but harmonious on the nose. Some unintegrated oak is still there. Medium expressive on the palate dark fruits, earth and herbal aromas along some more oak notes on the palate. What is missing here is a bit more depth but especially more precision as well as a touch fruit sweetness. It’s round and harmonious but I guess this will open up a bit more and get more complex with a few more years of cellaring. Medium+ length with a rather earth-driven finish. A tad below the Montrose (rated 93pts).

Decanting: I guess this could use at least two hours.

    Group average: 91.25 pts
Group rank: 40th out of 48

June 26, 2021 - Deep garnet color turning tawny brick orange at the rim with a transparent edge, indicating considerable age. The bouquet is attractively perfumed with baked orange peel, potpourri on the red and black fruits ending with hints of leather and eucalyptus. The palate is medium bodied with mellowed acidity (due to its age) that elegantly balances the black currants, baked raspberry fruits with secondary flavors of sweet vanilla on toasted oak, all the way to the long, silky finish with hints of dried herbs. This is a classic Saint-Estèphe. Great structure; solid mid palate; purity in fruit; exquisite balance of power and elegance. Drink now until 2030. 95+

June 20, 2021 - Grand Bordeaux 2000 horizontal tasting; 6/20/2021-6/21/2021: Grand Bordeaux 2000 tasting with ~60 wines from the vintage hosted by a private collector. All wines were poured directly from the bottle with no decant and served in flights of 4. As general observations I would highlight: 1/ Today the 2000 is, without a doubt, a right bank vintage with Pomerol the star, 2/ the vast majority of wines are still going strong with hardly any past their peak 3/ On the left bank, St Estèphe was most ready to drink with a lot of wines in a closed stage right now, 4/ On the left bank, 2nd to 4th growths were generally more open for business than the 1st growths which almost all closed, only hinting at their full potential. 5/ If you must open a left bank bottle, Margaux is the safest place to look. Complete scoring overview and additional commentary included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Fine tobacco, leather, dark cherry fruit core, green minty notes as a herbal side and just a whiff of perfume. Fresh, more red berry type of palate. Good balance even if tannin still have quite some grip. This felt rather early in the drinking window. A solid Calon Segur, but more recent vintages are no doubt punching in a different weight class (2010, 2016, 2018).

May 6, 2021 - No introduction needed here, even if this château has been a relative underperformer.
Colour: v deep red, v thin rim, brick tinge.
Nose: full, v ripe, verging on mature but still vibrantly fresh, cassis after a good couple of hours, still hints of Bovril when first opened, earthy notes, q classic St Estèphe in spite of the high Merlot content.
Taste: med body, somewhat sharp, ok fruit, definite acidity, v cassis, long finish but hot (13% ABV only!), astringent as in other notes about this wine.
Overall, typical of the property for the time: classic St Estèphe but without the refinement of its peers. Still a treat, sentimentally, to taste.

April 15, 2021 - Split. Chalky tannins and still fairly astringent. Flavor profile was the usual cassis, leather, vanilla. Short finish, but overall well-balanced. Split probably had another 5 years on it easily, so the tasting window on CT is probably still accurate for the full bottles.

Need to decant off sediment. Last glass was a big chewy.

(Calon-Segur) This showed not so great. Nose of redcurrants, peppercorns and stones. Not too expressive. Ripe, juicy and bright with some nice dense fruit and dark berr flavors. Huge tannins but sneaky length indicates greatness in the future but not today.
