  September 5, 2023 - Dense, dark, deep, intense, long, and full-bodied, the wine is continuing to develop, flesh out, soften, and add complexities. Now, you find earthy, forest floor, tobacco leaf, cedar, lead pencil currants, and truffle. The wine finishes with a big blast of spicy, sweet, fleshy black currants. Give it only another year or three, and it should really start to deliver the goods. The wine blends 67% Cabernet Sauvignon with 33% Merlot. Drink from 2025-2060.

  September 4, 2023 - This example of the 2005 Ducru-Beaucaillou shows a polished, deep, suave nose, full of ripe blueberries and blackcurrant, subtly freshened by a little redcurrant. Just after the cork is pulled, this seems as though it still has a ways to go to integrate its oak, but as the fruit expands with an hour in the decanter it actually feels pretty well-proportioned now. The sleek but powerful fruit profile evolves and evolves, adding a little pencilly mineral and wildflower on the palate, which shows an appealing muscle without flabbiness or heat. This is probably the slowest evolving of the 2005 St. Juliens and I'm afraid I've under-estimated it as my score seems to keep creeping higher over time... 96-97(+?)

  May 12, 2023 - This is a great test of where the 2005 vintage stands on the left bank. Blackish crimson color, dense wine. Nose of cassis, black currants, pepper, some mint, herbs, and hints of graphite. Quite complex mid palate with lots of perfumed cassis and dark red fruits, medium to full bodied, great structure and balance, built to last, finishes long with slightly sweet tannins. Very nice indeed.
