April 14, 2019 - Comparative Tasting of B. Mascarello Barolo and G. Mascarello Barolo Monprivato (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Ripe, somewhat heady dark cherry scents. In contrast, saline, lean, and earthy in the mouth with grainy tannins. As it airs out, more cherry fruit and nicely balanced by soil on the finish, but this still comes to a pretty abrupt close and is tough going right now. Properly young and austere.

March 15, 2019 - Uncles Fine Wine Spring BYO (Home): The nose has fresh, moist tobacco, blue fruit, something sweet, sour and floral. It is complex. Tight structure, while delicious fruit flavors penetrates the curtain of tannins. Complex and lovely wine that was perceived as surprisingly accessible now.

July 30, 2018 - gotta match the Burlotto with the other big boy Barolo of the vintage. The nose doesn’t have the airiness of the Burlotto but it makes up for it in its raw intensity of rose, red berry and earthy tar. It’s a big hit on the olfactory as it seems to just penetrate and stimulate all dem nose hairs. The palate is as expansive and deep as the nose. Textured and a bit jagged on the edges due to the tannins but there is so much going on in this wine. It is deep and filled with warm red herbaceous fruit. Doesn’t have the same primary nature of a year ago, but there’s still plenty of fruit and elegance to spare.

July 26, 2018 - Shows complex aromatics of dark red fruit, earth, rose, and an intoxicating wave of mint. Serious depth on the palate, medium plus frame with good freshness, tons of extract. There's so much material here that the oak is already integrated beautifully, and though I did pick up a hair of alcohol it's well buried in the mix. The finish took some time to develop, but when it did it picked up lots of power and drive. Quite a show, with no hard edges to the ultra solid tannins. In a side by side with the 13' Burlotto Monvigliero, this Bartolo was definitely showing more complete on the night, and notably meatier, but still retaining a Burgundian sensibility.

June 19, 2018 - Effusive yet regal nose of rose, raspberries, and a hint of tar. Bright and pure red fruits on entry, medium plus bodied yet quite svelte, balanced raspberry acidity along with firm yet velvet tannins, good length. Great tension and energy coiled up, yet without excessive weight. Just wonderful grace and purity.

Two nights after, with a third of a bottle taken from the fridge: a touch more crystalline on the palate, with more pure red fruits surfing on top of the structure, a shot of amaro herb, a lot of layers layered closely like a millefeuille.

Day 3: the final glass - lighter still, more crystalline and ethereal. A real beauty, brings such pleasure.
