Community Tasting Notes 6

September 5, 2023 - Translucent brick-ish red in color, the nose is best after a swirl. Scents of dried red cherries with a hint of dried figs, pruned plums, and a little balsamic reduction. Once sipped, there is a carry over of these notes, along with a bit of leather and espresso. I think this is as developed as its going to get. Maybe not something to share while entertaining friends (open better stuff!), but fine for a taste at home on a weeknight.

September 26, 2016 - I recall my overall impression of this wine well - so the point score is accurate for my records. But I don't recall the specific notes. Good daily drinking, savory Sangiovese (Morellino = Sangiovese) at <$15.

July 29, 2016 - The extremely woody/oaky nose on the wine is really a turn off. Feels like I'm licking the side of a wine barrel. Have tasted a lot better efforts from Tuscany worth spending money on.

June 8, 2016 - From the Morellino di Scansano DOCG in the southern Maremma region of Tuscany, due south of Siena near the coast, this 100% Sangiovese is, at first, very typical of the region and the grape (riper than, say, Chianti), with initial aromas of sour cherry and leather leading to rich, luscious blackberry and complex Italian savouriness characterized by notes of olive, tomato leaf, herbs, and roasted red pepper. There's also significant cherry and pomegranate tartness on the palate. With time, the nose retains a decent balance of the fruity and the savoury, but things really thin out on the palate, with barely any fruit to speak of and bitter herbs, largely flavourless, filling the vacuum. Given the initial appeal, this is certainly a disappointment, but it's nonetheless a fine, food-friendly red if drunk right away and not left to linger.
