April 7, 2024 - Like a Dunn Howell mountain on steroids.

April 1, 2024 - A deep red full mouth of mountain berries, bark, smoke, and wisp of vanilla. Continued to open up over the dinner. Expect this to continue to age well for 10+ years.

March 15, 2022 - Spring Break 2022; 3/12/2022-3/18/2022: Into a decanter for 60 min before the first glass. First thought was ‘looks like a Dunn’ whatever that means. Second thought was smells like a Dunn on steroids.

    First glass

Nose of black cherry and forest floor, cola, hint of charred embers, subtle pine forest—divine! Palate has black/red cherry, cola notes. This is really good juice at 10 yrs. That being said, let’s see what more air does as it still seemed a bit muted. 95 if scoring.

    Second glass at 2 hrs

The notes haven’t changed apart from the cola disappearing, though the finish is longer and more robust! 96 pts

Drank with spaghetti and red sauce at 2.5 hrs, no movement or improvement either way….still drinking well.

At 3 hrs this became a little bitter, though the nose was still good. Drank best 1-2 hrs after decant.

I was worried I killed an infant, I did not, this is young, but this can go for many many years. Open with some air and enjoy — I sure did… or age until it suits you, this ain’t falling off an aging cliff anytime soon. I wish I bought more back in 2016, can’t remember if I didn’t or was allocation limited. Try again 2027 or after.

Side note: Did not compliment baguette and blue cheese as well as the HM Treebottom served earlier this week.

November 27, 2020 - My first note said wait 4 years, I only waited 3 and decided to open one for Thanksgiving. This wine has really evolved. Its ready to drink now in my view as its more subtle and sublime than a standard Dunn HM. Maybe its the old vines but the fruit is already well integrated and the tannins are soft. This has the structure to go on for years still but its more approachable than I would expect. Very food friendly. Not sure how long I will wait on the remaining bottles.

December 24, 2019 - Massive wine. Tasted blind side by side with the 2012 Howell Mountain. The 2012 was massive compared to the regular Howell. Decanted 4 hours. Loads of dark mountain fruit with balanced tannins. Incredible.
