October 19, 2020 - Superb right now. Classic Lagrange nose, but subtle and refined feel on the palate.
March 3, 2020 - Not in balance at all. The fruit is OK, but disturbing green, harsh tones in the finish totally ruin the overall impression. Keeping in mind that this second wine of Lagrange can be excellent (like the legendary 1996), this was a huge disappointment, especially when considering the vintage.
May 10, 2019 - A solid performance but still lacking the wow factor. It is holding up well at 14 and feels as if it will go for a few more years yet. The fruit is a bit muted and the cedar and leather notes are quite evident. The alcohol is noticeable but not too hot. Last bottle.
April 28, 2019 - Kept for 5 years under condition 2, for the last 7 years under condition 1 (see my profile). Color: clear red-purple with a small orange rim. At the second day nose and taste were more open than on the first one. Nose: red fruit, rather subdued. Taste: red berries and blackberries, a bit of sous bois and cedar with a nice amount of oak and a good acidity. The tannins were almost resolved. Best with food, on its own the alcohol was a bit to prominent for me. After two lesser bottles, this was nice again. 88-89.
March 20, 2019 - 6/12.
Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Attractive, lightly smoky, minerally red and black fruits. Medium bodied, again smoky red and black fruit on the palate, fresh, savoury acidity, quite good depth, slightly firm tannin on the good length finish. VGI, drinking well.
February 20, 2019 - Cigarbox, pencilshave. Blueberries. Nice elegant.
December 31, 2018 - Simple one dimensional, but good wine. Wines like this demonstrate the "goodness" of the 2005s. Lower level wine has held up for 13 years.
November 2, 2018 - Youthful and fresh. Well made and very nice, but somewhat muted. Notes of cedar and black currant. Nice tannins and structure but fades quickly. Maybe too young?
September 11, 2018 - A lot of cristals on the cork. Drunk with wild duck with apple-horse-radish compote. Not much of of a nose. Taste: above all nice cedar, besides that this time not very differentiated. Still nice, but this time the impression is above all, that this wine is quite diluted. Still some fine but drying tannins. This bottle was not as good as the previous one. As an experiment I will keep my last bottle for one or years. 87.
August 25, 2018 - Dark red color. PNP, split bottle over 2.5 hours. First bottle of this I've opened, and time has served it well. This really was quite lovely tonight. The nose shows a mix of red and black fruits, a deep red cherry with a pure black currant note and undertones of huckleberry mixed with a strong sense of graphite minerality and a modest earthen note. The palate is medium weight or a touch more, very transparent, and following the nose precisely, this has nice structure and mouthfeel with a certain purity that while maybe not real complex just feels right. I don't usually buy a lot of second wines, but this was a very nice effort in a great vintage and is one that is paying dividends now as a super value. As nice as this is, it's going to be fun to eventually see how big brother shows too. 90+ to 91pts.
