April 6, 2019 - Clear medium tawny; clean medium plus nose of dates, figs, toffee, honey and vanilla; developed nose; sweet; medium plus acidity; low tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn; long finish; outstanding quality; drink now, but better in another 5 years; beautiful - not as concentrated as the solera 1927

January 12, 2018 - This isn't as dense or as treacly as the 1927 Solera, which I reviewed in December 2016 and, giving it a 94 (but really in a 93-97 range), called "surely... one of the world's greatest drinks" and "certainly one of the greatest things I have ever tasted," but it's not that far off. It's another truly amazing PX from Alvear, with a similarly thick and silky texture, a truly wonderful mouthfeel that makes it seem like it's melting on the palate, oozing like maple syrup. In place of the darker, brooding notes of the '27 (which, mahogany-coloured, is indeed made from a Solera system started in 1927, whereas this, amber-coloured, is from a single vintage aged in earthenware jars ("tinajas") for 12 months), there's concentrated raisin and prune offset with lighter apricot and orange, riding just enough acidity to calm the sweetness, along with honey, nuts, baking spice that's fairly mild but nonetheless offers a nice kick, and intriguing minerality on the back end. Brilliant and complex, in the 93-94 range, it's a drink to savour in contemplation, and it's a truly exceptional pleasure to do so.

December 13, 2017 - Dark amber, even in a small glass. A lot of dried fig, walnut, fruit bread, hints of mulling spices and very dense and very long, but so sweet it is hard to drink. Still it is quite a sensation. It will go well with a strong blue cheese for example or any dessert based on dried fruit, but on it's own, it's to sweet for me. Even a small bottle will serve a lot of people...
