May 23, 2019 - Blackberries, herbal notes, chocolate, tobacco, layers of spice, smokey oak. A+

December 12, 2018 - Tasting with Chris Carpenter: Waves of deep dark fruits, laced with vibrant floral, earth, sweet tobacco and coffee aromas. The palate shows structured tannins but vibrant acidity, and a concentrated core of currants and black cherries. Complex notes of rocks, earth, mint, tobacco, cigar box. Really complex and lovely with much more evolution.

August 2, 2018 - Big and bold cherry fruit, licorice and oak. Great cab now, but will drink my other bottles in 2021and beyond.

May 22, 2018 - This wine can be summed up in three words: this needs time. It has the density, polish, and class that Cardinale can offer like few others, but these strengths right now are almost drawbacks: inward, dense, and rustic, the wine reflects the 2013 vintage - in all its intensity and promise, but also in its (current) inaccessibility and standoffishness.

Cherry red in color, medium in body, nose of boysenberry, baking spices, and tree bark. Tastes of blackberry, graphite, pine needles, and cedar, with a dark, woodsy, and tannic finish. Blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot. 14.5% alcohol. More than 92% of the overall blend comes from the mountains (28% Veeder, 26% Howell, 19% Spring, 19% Diamond), with the remainder from the valley (6% Stag's Leap, 2% St. Helena). Better on second day.

Drinking this wine is like talking to a teenager who isn't listening: they will eventually get there, but it's just not hitting home yet. For me, this is too backward to be opened (the first time I've said this after drinking Cardinale vintages from 2006-2014 over the past few months). I'll hold my other bottle until 2020 or later, when it will almost surely be better.
