December 1, 2021 - Still quite dark in color and beginning to be a little more interesting in the aromatics than a couple of years ago. Other recent notes describe it well. It's still in its early maturity and continues to have dense fruit and powerful tannins. Hard to say how much complexity or personality it will develop with more age. But certainly very enjoyable and well made.

September 28, 2021 - Tasty blackberry, olive, black pepper, and whole cluster notes on the nose and palate with tasty acidity and mineral notes on the moderate finish.

March 29, 2020 - I've always loved Copain's version, so I was excited to see what Kevin, Jeff and company could do with this vineyard. This is probably my 4th or 5th bottle and they keep getting better. A sauvage syrah with a very Rhone-like nose of black pepper, crushed rocks and bacon fat. Medium-bodied, chewy and fairly tannic, with flavors of olive tapenade, smoke, gravel and blackberries, with a floral undercurrent. While the Rhys Santa Cruz Mountain estate syrahs are more more feminine and elegant (think Cote Rotie), this is a more masculine style (think St Joseph). A great syrah at a great price with the 20% case discount.

January 19, 2020 - Dark fruit, some savory elements to the aromatics. Varietally correct, but not particularly distinctive yet. Palate is medium-full, with solid fruit that is beginning to relax from the density of youth. The tannins are fine and well buffered by the fruit, and the acidity is perfectly integrated to give this a fresh lift without any brightness. This has nice balance and should continue to age gracefully for a while yet.
