November 12, 2019 - Egged on to try this by my friend CSIMM's other worldly review. Sadly for me, I am not finding this to be near as open for business as he did. The tannins are taking center stage right now, really putting the clamps down on any flavor trying to leak through an almost impregnable wall.

Hints of blackberry, stark minerality, loads of forest floor, white pepper, loamy soil and violets on the nose. First sip is fairly cringe-worthy just from the tannic bite, but quite clearly this is put together with excellent structure and great balance. Nice layering and terrific length, this is going to need a number of years before it is really approachable if this bottle is any indication. Can't really rate it easily right now, but pressed I'd say 93-94.

Day 2: Felt compelled to report back after 24 hours of air. The tannins have loosened up quite a bit, and it is showing SO much better than yesterday. The tension and purity are notable, as is the energy crossing the palate. This shows massive potential and upside. Scoring now would be more in the 95-96+ range.

October 22, 2019 - 75 Years of Zachys (DC) (LongView Gallery Washington DC): Nice to try this again after the last outing at UGC. Just about the last wine tasted so not going to even attempt to score but came away liking it and thinking my general impression is that it is better than the last time tasted. Probably 93-94 now.

September 9, 2019 - Black currant, blackberry, deep black cherry, earthy black plum skin, fresh wet dark soil/mulch, Pessac-Leognan truffle, clove, and a subtle, beautifully brooding (almost smokey) minerality that you might find at the bottom of the river Styx or some murky bog in a Game of Thrones episode.

Medium-to-full bodied, with a near-perfect mid-palate drop and a gorgeous semi-chewy mouthfeel that adds texture and concentration. A really nice execution of flavor-delivery overall for such a young wine. Finishes with an enticing earth-meets-spice note that swirls around the black core fruit. The faintest amount of red fruit darts trough the profile to further heighten complexity and provide lift.

So, I’m no Left Bank wizard, nor do I claim to know jack-in-the-box about what makes a quality Bordeaux necessarily, (especially in such juvenile states), but I’ll certainly say there is a beautifully crafted conveyance here that begs for sip after sip and continues feeding the palate old and new world satisfaction. QPR is solid in my opinion; overdelivers beyond my expectations.

There are some wines you drink, you appreciate, and you may tell a wine-friend or two about the next day. Then there are those wines you takr a sip, and then another sip... and seconds later you are already scouring the internet trying to figure out the best deal in town to pick yourself up some of that holy juice. This SHL is the latter for me, quite literally. In fact, anyone with suggestions as to where I can snatch a fistful of these wines at a song, let me know. I think I broke my Wine-Searcher app looking for deals on this! I know they are readily available, so this is obviously more of a first-world problem than anything else :)

96-97++ points. I know other CT’ers here have more conservative scores, but I’m ok being a little more risqué on this one.

June 14, 2019 - What a treat to try this wine again only a week later - it is indeed closing up in my opinion, a wall of tight iron tannins, but with this bottle, especially the last sips, some raspberry fruit and rose petal peek their way through and hint at greatness in about 10-12 years.
