April 19, 2019 - Decanted for 2 hours. Great wine with food. A bit dryer than most of Mike’s Cabernets but a very good wine from attack through a very very long finish. Dark berry and red fruits frame a wonderfully long expansive wine with a bit of gravel and drying to keep it honest. With food this wine delivers.

February 8, 2019 - 2017 Carter tasting + other Carters (Carter Cellars (Envy Wines) - Calistoga): Blackberry and black cherry dominate, with a flowing delivery that washes over the palate with beautiful fruit flavors. Cassis, plum, and some river rock round out the profile. A touch dry on the back end, making for a well-to-do counterbalance to the plush fruit. Ripe and ready! 94-95 points.

December 28, 2018 - Violets with a hint of menthol on the nose. Dark garnet in the glass with translucent edges. Smooth and supple finish with flavors of dark berries and currant. This is a fantastic wine and one of my Favorite Carter's produced. Consistent profile year after year. Downside is the price is beginning to hit stratospheric levels, which will keep this and other Carter wines out of reach for many oenophiles - which is unfortunate given the caliber and experience of Mark's wines.

August 12, 2018 - Slow ox for 3 hours. Drank over 60 minutes.

No formal notes; took to some friends house to enjoy with steaks. This was very nice, just struck me as a little hot right now around the edges. Needs to lay down for a few years. Food helped.

June 6, 2018 - It has been two years since I last had this wine. PnP with notes of black cherry, cassis, black and ripe red raspberry, red and black currant, tobacco leaf, black licorice, and a faint herbal/menthol hit on the tail end.

Allowed to breathe for over an hour, with not much of a change in the overall profile. Some alcohol continued to hover over the core fruit, creating a bit of a primary delivery at times. Ultra-pure fruit, but masked slightly by a thin boozy layer that suggested even more time is needed before this wine truly comes into its most optimum drinking window. This GD's depth stayed at a more medium level as a seeming result of some youthful restraint.

94+ points on day 1. The purity of fruit and overall flavor profile of this wine are beautifully crafted. However, I would give it another 2+ years in bottle to settle in and shake off some of the remaining hootch. Definite upside after 2021.

Day 2 update: I had some remaining juice that I sealed back in a small bottle and tried 24 hours later. An improvement for sure, with less alcohol pulling the palate away from the energetic flavors. 95+ points on day 2. Continue to hold until 2020/2021.
