October 24, 2022 - Hawkes Butte remains, in my opinion, one of the most consistent performers in the Copain stable. This was excellent, meaty and rich, with Rhone-like character. Black olive tapenade, smokey bacon, rich blackberry fruit flavors. This is fading a bit, and probably shouldn't be held much longer, but the secondary development has moved this in a positive direction, and this was still drinking well on days 2 and 3. This was purchased at release, stored in a cold cellar and untouched except for moving from MA to NC.

October 9, 2018 - Immediately open for business and beautifully balanced - this bottle made up the delicious second half of a previous Monday night Copain Syrah side-by-side. Every bit as enjoyable as its ‘02 Garys Vineyard counterpart, this Hawks Butte offering steered away from the herbaciousness of the former and instead provided a wealth of ripe fruit, berry pie, and menthol. The wine still carried those savoury Syrah notes you’d want - olive, graphite, smoke, cured meat - in perfect harmony with its sweeter side. A combination of peppery spice and mocha hung on the finish. This was big, no doubt, but not overwhelmingly so; the seamless integretion of all components and positive effects of age have resulted in a supremely drinkable wine. As with its counterpart, this bottle was an incredible value and still has some years to go!

July 25, 2017 - Very smooth mature Cali syrah.
No need to wait, although I don't see it falling off a cliff either.
Mellow, with aromas of meat, leather, spice, earth, dried red fruit, and plum.
    Went OK with BBQ chicken.

January 30, 2016 - Wish I had a few more bottles. This has held up well and I love the style, reminds me of an old world syrah. Drink up if you have it!
