April 19, 2024 - Mostly spice, coffee, tar, and licorice. On the palate quite stemmy and bitter. Lacked fruit. I’ve had some really appealing whole cluster wines but this isn’t it. Couldn’t finish the bottle.
April 13, 2024 - This was my third Charvin over the past year from a few different vintages. I would have to say that though all were good, none of them were able to deliver a high level of enjoyment. They seem like they were textbook studies with a lot of structure and pretty good acid, but the fruits were not that plush, there was a sternness to the wine and though
I've really liked Charvin wines in the past, I don't think I'll be seeking anymore. There's just too much good CDP out there, that deliver great deals of pleasure.
March 25, 2024 - Out of 375mL. Pretty nose of kirschy, ripe black fruit, florals, mint, twigs -- the whole cluster is clear. Riper than my taste, but with good acidity and the alcohol is in check. The tannins are fine and chewy, giving grip rather than glossy. Even though I don't especially care for this ripeness, there's still much to admire here.
January 28, 2024 - From our cellar. Decanted for sediment and drank over three hours. Big wine, full bodied, dark fruits, meat juices, spices, herbs. Can tell it's from a hot year, but the intensity of the flavors helps mask the higher alcohol level. Have one more, will try it again in a couple years, hoping for some more tertiary flavors to develop.
December 3, 2023 - Tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red minimal bricking
-jammy cherry spice cassis mature elements
-med acidity, med+/full weight thick almost unctuous faded earthy kirsch faint caramel oxidative note and some mature notes, med- tannins
-still big 18 years on and just barely showing any tertiary characteristics
October 14, 2023 - 30 min decant. Not much sediment. Deep and slightly baked/stewed fruit: plums and cherry. Rich but not that heavy. Lovely top notes of wild herbs rescue this. Pleasant enough but hard to love. My last bottle of Charvin and I can't see myself buying any more.
October 12, 2023 - Not budged much since last bottle 6 years ago. Excellent Fruit balance good structure and ripe but balanced finish.
September 5, 2023 - Chateauneuf at its best. Sweet red fruits complemented with balaamic and herbal notes. Sensible saltiness. Delicious.
August 18, 2023 - 5/6. A little muted to start (and cold) but 30 mins and we're off. Super id-toned and complex, with baked earth, old libraries, leather, some dark raspberry. After 4 hours the last glass was showing some liqueur/alcohol in the finish. Seems good to go now.
February 5, 2023 - Monthly Tasting Group: Rhones (Noyes and Cutler, St. Paul, MN): Tasted. Small Taste of the '05 and '07 at the end of the night. Personally, I really like Charvin, but this was tough sledding after the older CdP's we had earlier. No notes, but probably favored the '07 slightly, both good, but not that different.
