July 1, 2019 - Pale lemon in the glass. Already direct on the nose, but still youthful - green apple, white cherry, white peach and tons of florals. Good concentration on the palate, nothing too rich, but beautifully highlighted by the bright acidity. Didn't find the depth that would be expected from a great Spatlese Riesling, but even besides this, it's a wine that is easy-drinking and highly enjoyable for an everyday go-to.

February 18, 2019 - Prior bottle was only six months ago so my notes were virtually unchanged. Nose showed tart orange, apple, white peach and nearly a white cherry. Medium bodied with white peach and apple upfront, adding pear and melon through the middle as the wine adds depth, but the acidity, tartness and density still conceals some of the mid-body complexity. Very pretty mixture of white orchard fruit notes and richer, more tropical notes at this stage. The acidity remains vibrant if not quite electric but works quite well with the fruit combination. This wine clearly still has years to go, with additional integration and complexity to be expected. In that regard, I may have opened this wine young, but to me, the interplay between the fruit and the vibrant acidity at this stage was worth the loss of resolved complexity to be gained in future years.

August 5, 2018 - Prior bottle was nearly 16 months ago and this wine continues to show well. Tart orange, apple, pear and white peach on the nose. Medium bodied and remains clearly a step ahead of the 2015 Ürziger Würzgarten in terms of complexity, depth and acidity. Remains peach and apple upfront, but now picking up some pear and melon as well. Mostly whitefruit with some tart notes, alternating with some gold notes in the background. Mid-body has developed more richness and the tropical notes there (pineapple, mango and orange) are coming into focus. Lots of acidity remains here and it meshes quite well with the fruit qualities. The various components have begun to come together quite well as it no longer feels that the acidity is concealing complexity. Rather, the wine is showing open, the components coming together and balance increasing. I will have my next bottle in Spring 2019.

August 13, 2017 - AP 07 16. Stunningly direct, clean, and pure. The Treppchen Spatlese doesn't play to the often ostentatious and flowery nature of the vintage, but instead depends on subdued charm and playful acidity. Reminds me much more of the *other* Chistoffel's wines this year in it's refined baroque structure. Beautiful for drinking with food or all by itself - chilled on a summer afternoon.

Curious to see how (or if) the Christoffel-Erben estate wines change with the acquisition of Robert Eymael's estates by foreign investors in 2016. They've always been so refined and beautiful and I hope the new regime doesn't seek to make a statement. As Karl Josef Christoffel of the Jos Christoffel Jr. estate is nearing retirement as well, it would be a shame to lose these two similarly-named vintners in such a short window of time.
