Community Tasting Notes 3

  • Lord of the Bottles Likes this wine:

November 6, 2020 - Decanted 2 hours. This was pretty shut down with some black fruit and hints of mint. With more air the wine softened somewhat and the nose started opening to reveal canphor and smoke. Great potential either this bottle is shut down or the wine is entering a dumb phase after 6 years. Score withheld but was a nice drink.

July 4, 2020 - Nose: [55°] Ripe strawberry flesh and dark cherries, burnt embers or some sort of softly charred wood, old but clean cigar box, vivid forest floor with black earth. [61°] A bit of tobacco leaf comes through with bitter brush, tree bark and branches.

Palate: [61°] Black fruits with a bit of red and cool blue fruits, clean bare oak, similar burnt embers from the nose that gives it a nice bitterness, a bit of smokiness, dark graphite, savory wet river rocks, black mulch and (slightly green) undergrowth.

Attributes: Clear, dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of chewy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium acidity (if more, it's well integrated). Amazing finish of at least 32-34+ seconds.

Thoughts: This got better throughout the night.. or within the few hours I've had it. Unfortunately, it was the last glass that was getting really good. The flakes of burnt embers floating in the air really make this interesting for me (who would've thought). Great rustic earthiness, a pleasant backdrop of dark fruit and also kinda campfire-y(?). I swear I'll never learn but this is obviously young but for those who like vivid, in-your-face intensity (where it's almost too much/prickly), this is actually pretty enjoyable now with some air time. It was kinda hot at the beginning (14.9% alc - you might as well call it 15%) but with some air time, it blows off greatly. Flavors are on the attack (like an assault but for me it's in a good way) and quite persistent. Enjoy with an at least 1.5-2 hours of of air time or 3-4 years of bottle age (and this is all just guessing with the hopes that the heat and green going away with bottle age). 98-99+ with bottle age (the length gave it the extra point for me).

Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Slow-ox'ed in bottle for the duration of consumption over 2.5 hours.
