August 17, 2022 - Have not had this in years. Frankly, it’s tired and close to being done. Classic aromas that are followed by a lean palate that seems like it’s going to fall apart soon. It’s enjoyable but just barely. (86)

June 30, 2022 - Rhône or Nôwhere 2022; 6/30/2022-9/30/2022 (Malcom, Nebraska): Until Caroline Frey took over wine making responsibilities, “La Chapelle” was sort of known to me as a perennial underachiever with very few vintages in the last 40 years really meeting their potential. The late 90’s was perhaps the deepest point of the malaise. That being said, this bottle proves that the underpinnings were always there and I found it to be very enjoyable, if not quite on the level of the other examples of late-90’s Hermitage we enjoyed on the night. There is still quite a bit of life left.

June 20, 2022 - Really good on nose, medium plus mixed black and red cherry, earthy, forest floor, light vanilla, dry, medium acidity, medium alcohol, medium body, medium smooth tannin, long finish, not suitable ageing

May 23, 2022 - At its peak and potentially the start of its decline. Blackish ruby red with bricking at the rim. decanted and drank over 90 minutes. Paired well with yellow cheeses. Nose earthy, meaty, smoky, hints of olive tapenade and plums, mushrooms, lots of tertiary aromas reflected on the palate. Acidity beginning to wane, tannins fully resolved, decent length and medium bodied. Enjoyable but not flabbergasting.

May 2, 2022 - Pausing for the Cause 2022 (Chicago, IL): From magnum. For a change, a bottle of La Chapelle that's actually decent. Surprisingly clean without any off notes, though there might have been a smidgen of volatile acidity here. Beautifully clean black fruit on the palate, but this still lacks the salinity and brine notes that I love in my syrah, even though there are a few smoky tones here.
