November 6, 2017 - Aged for 18 months in barriques.

Somewhat translucent black cherry color. Ripe and somewhat sweet nose with aromas of smoke, some ripe dark fruits, a little bit of blackberry marmalade, a hint of sweet oak spice and a touch of peppercorns. Contrasting the rather sweet and succulent nose, the wine is noticeably dry, tightly-knit and even somewhat austere on the palate with only medium body and very acid-driven character. There are complex, savory flavors of sour cherry bitterness, freshly ground black peppers, tart lingonberries, some sweet oak spice, a little bit of fresh and crunchy blackberries, a hint of vanilla and a touch of sweeter black cherry character. The wine's structure seems to rely more on the high acidity than on the tannins that initially feel rather light and mellow. However, the tannins seem to be of that piling-up sort, growing in intensity sip by sip, making you realize that this wine is actually a bit more tannic than it feels at first. The finish is dry, tightly-wound and quite angular with savory and somewhat austere flavors of tart lingonberries, crunchy blackberries, quite pronounced sour cherry and mineral bitterness, a little bit of vanilla and a hint of rough peppery spice. Alcohol warmth pushes very slightly through.

A surprisingly serious, angular and even somewhat austere expression of Syrah - this is not a big, concentrated and unctuous Hermitage, but instead a lighter and more restrained example of the style with great structure and nice complexity. Although a bit underwhelming effort if compared to the more revered producers of the region, this still wine shows surprisingly much promise for the future. In its current phase the wine feels a bit awkward as the oak department feels somewhat disjointed and a bit too pronounced, but I can imagine 4-6 more years in a cellar might smooth things down a bit. Not a wine to be aged for ages, but definitely one in need of further cellaring. Most likely will not ever be a big and rich wine, but can be a very lovely example of the lighter and more restrained style of hermitage, once the most obvious oak aromatics start to integrate with the fruit.

December 3, 2016 - No 26, meaty on the nose, leaves, medium body, ripe tannin, violet, high acidity. boxwood in the finish. Good but sharp.
