December 11, 2021 - Alex's 40th Birthday (Alex and Fiona's in AMK): Quite lovely - not the strongest Palmer, but one of the most charming ones to come out of a lesser than heralded vintage. Then nose was lovely, with fragrant drifts of tobacco and damp leaves, cassis and plums, with a nice earthy spice running along behind. The palate was showing very nicely too. A little on the slimmer side given the vintage, but still with enough weight and presence to make a nice drink, with charming flavours of cassis and plums seasoned with nice bits of spice and orange peel, all this couched in nicely fresh acidity and Palmer’s fine-boned tannins running into a nicely sweet-sour, kum-kum finish. Such an enjoyable wine, drinking really well now.

July 27, 2020 - 20 years ago I stated open the bottle and drink it with a minimum of 8 people. Excellent nose, but vanishing. In the meantime great balance and great aftertaste. This bottle was bringing a unexpected prolongation of the bouquet and every compound of the taste. A big surprise. Allard Botenga

December 20, 2018 - An impeccably stored bottles in fantastic condition. Clear in the glass and whilst showing some age, you would not have thought 40 years old. Such warmth in the nose. Floral and perfume. With time some basil and pizza. For a so called off vintage, this was superb. Drank with ST and father.

March 29, 2014 - Château Palmer vertical (Burg Layen, Nahe, Germany): A nice surprise, I hate to admit but I continue to like the 1980 Bordeaux ... Obviously a bit thin and watery, but fresh, simple, nice acidity and with an attractive finish. A nice wine to be had a glass of on the terrace before dinner. Obviously prices of the 1980 Palmer, Haut Brion etc. are not in line with the idea of a nice summer wine!
