Community Tasting Notes 5

September 1, 2021 - good level and cork, colour distinctly brown-black, spicy nose, still noticeable oak, quite complex and interesting, very good in fact, palate rich, relatively cool for Barossa, smooth, distinctly dry finish with the slightly “sour” character that I found typical of all of the bottles spanning different vintages, in my opinion this was the best vintage of the ones I had, it gets bonus points for being out of the ordinary but overall not that brilliant and a bit disappointing for the expectations (and price), either I was over enthusiastic on the previous bottle or it was just a better bottle, certainly true that it is still a good wine and quite individual in character

November 9, 2019 - Wow, this was an adventurous auction purchase that hit the jackpot, must have been well cellared because still vigorous, nearly opaque black-red but with quite pervasive brown tinge, just superb nose, sweet fine complex fruit but with admirable restraint and no heat, palate of medium weight but with great depth and concentration of sweet fruit, well balanced mainly by acidity rather than tannin, overall a gentle wine, structure remains in the background but gives the necessary support, although finished in American oak it is now totally integrated and not really discernible, lovely wine of quite individual character, different, which is very welcome

April 19, 2016 - HdR Farewll BBQ (Hospice du Rhone): This one, also brought over by Raj, seemed old and past prime. There is some sweet fruit still left but mostly tart and dried fruit. No tannins. Still interesting and not dead at 21 years from vintage. It was cool to try and much appreciated.

February 16, 2010 - This bottle seemed a little tiered there was nice notes of tertiary fruit that you get from an aged fruit bomb but there was a distinct hole in the mid to back palate. This needed some more tannins to complete the picture.
A very high degree of unbalanced acidity on the finish (was this poorly acidified? ). With gentle decanting we managed to coax a little more sweetness out of it and food helped as well yet the acidity was still overbearing.
Considering the release price I would say this was very disappointing.

March 1, 2004 - Nice balanced full-bodied red. Really is a cross between aussie fruit and a more old world style. Nothing really exciting though. Solid and enjoyable. 3/04
