    July 31, 2021 - Level: Upper shoulder

This, like the 1967 tasted alongside it, was much better than I had expected. Medium colour, good bouquet, and quite fruity on the palate even now. There’s some acidity there which has kept it fresh.

Bought in a French supermarket in the late 1970s but stored in my cellar for the last thirty-odd years

    Tasted at the Winos’ Gruaud-Larose dinner, vintages 2002, 2000, 1999, 1996, 1990, 1986, 1982, 1975, 1973, 1967, 1961 (see reviews for the other vintages)

October 24, 2013 - Browning red in the meniscus. Bright, light colour, grenade shimmers in the translucent core. Quiet but very pretty nose of decaying leaves, iron, boudin, tofee, dry currants, dried flowers, cold tea. Hint of dates in the back. This is an old wine, baring ditto acidity. Refreshing, yet a tad sharp, pointy. Elegant and earthy. Old, but certainly not dead yet. 15.5/20

April 19, 2013 - From initial appearance of cork and the strong musty smell of the bottle, I initially thought this wine had lost it. But when poured, the colour looked surprisingly lively ruby red, with some hints of browing towards the edges. If I had to guess, I would have been late 80s/early 90s from the colour.
The musty smell quickly blew off, but sadly not much else came in return. Some hints of laurel, forest, but very muted.
On the palette, this wine surprised me. Still very much alive, initially still showing some red fruit notes that faded a little when the bottle was open. Very elegant wine, with light tannins, pleasant acidity, average length.

May 25, 2007 - Dinner in London (78/90 Chevalier; 73 GL; 73 BVGdlT; 04 Schrader; 05 Kutch) (Greens in St. James): This wine was surprisingly good considering the vintage and my own personal bias against GL. A pretty floral nose that showed some game, truffle, leather and a surprising amount of fruit, which certainly spoke to meticulous care in storage. Still, I can't help but find a slight tomato note that really throws GL off for my palate. It's not really tomato, of course (others though me crazy), but it's been my consistent impression of GL fruit across vintages (not that I'm an expert in their wines). That said, it had a wonderful suppleness and showed some quite lively black cherry. Great balance from front to back. Only a fool couldn't see past personal preference and enjoy this (and I am no fool). Quite elegant and greatly enjoyed, just not my favorite.
