March 12, 2022 - A fascinating, though certainly unexpected Vieille Serine Domaine de Pergaud from Eric Texier. Given the vintage reputation one might expect a bruiser, a brawler, a blunderbuss pointed menacingly at the face—all structure and sublimated charm. But where are the brutal tannins? The stewed fruits? The heat? If you are expecting that brawn and burliness, best to look elsewhere. That said, the 2015 tickles the palate with ripples of wild berry fruit, aromas of crushed violets and pastilles, with fine-grained (and lurking) tannins, and just a whisper of black pepper and game. And while decidedly mid-weight, this dances about the ring more like a bantam weight: finesse married with sneaky power—punching above its weight indeed. And lest one think it’s insubstantial or lacking gravitas, there’s startling persistence and detail belied by its relative generosity. I suspect there’s a more “serious” wine that will emerge from within, but in the meantime, this was delicious with braised duck legs in red wine with mushrooms, though fresher and less structured than expected. But as they say, it’s always the quiet ones.

Bizarre wine, floral and Syrah like on the nose. New worldish on the palate, tasted like a young Australian Shiraz, fine tannins but finished too sweet for my liking. Milk chocolate finish, yuck. Struggling to finish the first glass. Not sure I liked this wine at all. Probably not a style for me. Couldn’t even finish a glass, poured half a glass into flower pot, my bougainvillea got drunk tonight. I would take a Crozes Hermitage from Graillot, Chapoutier, or Darnaud over this any day of the week.

August 27, 2021 - I’m a big fan of Eric Texier’s wines but this didn’t do it for me. I drank over two days and at times got that nice, brooding, dark fruited / Syrah feel and at other got an overly acidic, lean, almost mousey attack.

I dove in and bought a case of 6 sight unseen (taste untasted?) so I’ve got a few more to go…

August 4, 2021 - Followed over two days. This pours youthfully deep in the glass. Deep ruby, but not glass staining. The nose is deep, brooding and youthful, seemingly fairly closed today. Aromas of Cassis, purple licorice, tar, bay leaf, and crushed rock reluctantly come from the glass. The palate is also fairly closed down and quite fiercely tannic, medium acid, medium plus tannin. The finish is also a bit clipped with the dark fruit closing things out. This is similar to other experiences I've had with young Texier. Quite deeply fruited, and not a ton of Syrah character in my view. I'd almost blind this as Cabernet. I'm hopeful this comes around with some bottle age.

April 30, 2021 - Drank over three days, nice nose, but all about the front end of the palate palate for me the first day. First day not long, but with fresh purple fruit, and some of the cured meatish. Although on the southern edges, it stays well within the northern rhone. Third night the nose comes more out, (more i room temperature). Front end gentle & coherent, Ends on the tounge like a good crozes Hermitage mixed with a Cornelissen Contadio. I am describing a non intervetional wine close to Cornas. Finishes much bether on the third day actually. Gentle and interesting at the same time, cudos! 90/91 - 1. day, 93 - 3 day
