January 2, 2023 - #16-99, 9% abv, 9821. From half-bottle. Scheurebe is one hell of a drug. Mango, passionfruit, guava, and rosewater(!) on the nose and palate. I love the herbal phenolic bitterness on the finish as well, which helps temper the intense, fruity sweetness here. Acidity is present, but doesn't play a large role in this wine -- it's just there in the right amount to keep all the other parts of this wine in check. Drinks like a tropical cocktail. Another Schwarz masterpiece, who somehow manages to craft wines of an over-the-top scale while keeping perfect balance, like the classical unstable equilibrium of Newtonian mechanics.

April 21, 2022 - From small capped bottle. Soaring spicy and perfumed nose. Sweet spicy pure and juicy - tons of acid. Citric with sweet tangerine, honey, juicy fruit. The palate is near perfect - so spherical and smooth and flavorful and amazing - tons of tangerine, honey, honeysuckle, spicy. Finish is long and complex and scintillating. Stunning. This has resolved some from the times I have had it before - less of a bruiser but so perfumed and lifted and complete. Thanks Jay! Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 6/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 19/20.

October 10, 2021 - Golden. Intense nose of tropical fruits with mango, peaches, persimmon, brown sugar, sage, bergamot, honey, very complex. On the palate still sweet with refreshing acidity and great balance. Long, long finish. -2030+. 5/14/19/10

April 11, 2020 - Deep golden, but without any hint of amber or orange tint. Unbelievable intense and ultimate complex nose and palate with most tropical fruits you can think of, along with brown sugar, spices. Long, longer... Even the cork is better in the 90's at MC. As if it would have been corked some years ago or yesterday. Perfect balance between fruit, sweetness and acidity. With further aging this is going to get less sweet. Even now it is not sweet enough anymore to go along with very sweet desserts. BA level. 5/15/19/10. -2030+. H.G. Schwarz has been honoured especially for his rieslaner. But I love his scheurebe sweet wines even more. What a tragedy that H.G. Schwarz retired in 2001. A date that became the end of wines like this at MC in terms of style and quality.

February 20, 2016 - They don't make 'em like they used to (New York City, NY): #16-99. From half-bottle. "This is your brain on drugs." The thing I love about scheurebe is the passion fruit. But there's just so much more. Pineapple, honey, mangoes, lemongrass, all sorts of things. The palate is rich, sweet, sappy, and super dense, but with acidity that gives all of these characteristics a narrative and flow. Wow.

February 20, 2016 - Very sweet and exotic with lychee, bacon, florals, guava (or is it mango?). So sweet on the palate with more tropical fruits - melon, bacon, quince. Just out of control.

February 20, 2016 - Excessibe Rhone and Riesling night (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): Last of my bottles. Not much to add to my previous notes on this - the usual array of exotic tropical, floral, and herbal flavours, and an amazing high wire balancing act of tremendous (BA-level) sweetness and acidity.

August 25, 2014 - Hans-Gunther Schwarz is a god (Nahm Thai (Park Slope, Brooklyn)): Salil's bottle. From 375ml. Better than the last bottle he brought. The nose is a universe onto itself - a spicy, exotic and marmalade-filled universe. Watermelon, tea, curry, lemongrass, exotic as hell, lime, tangerine. Thick - melon, spice, tropical and bacon. This is thick and rich but zingy as hell. Finish is tropical and spice. Not the structure of the 01 but in a perfect place right now. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

August 25, 2014 - Rieslings and Scheurebes at Nahm Thai (Brooklyn, NY): Best bottle of this that I've had yet. There's the usual whirlwind of exotic tropical fruits, honey, sage and other herbal/floral notes, but this bottle seemed to have an extra gear in terms of its intensity. It has the power and density of a big Beerenauslese, but with plenty of acidity beneath keeping it superbly balanced, and an incredibly long finish unfolding layers of flavour for minutes after each sip.
